@ribbont welcome to the new college landscape. HS recruiting isn’t as important. Since we didn’t get Syd straight out of HS, her impact on the program gets an asterisk? Those NCAA tournament wins don’t count?

I never said any of that.  Stick to what I said, not what you want to twist it to say.

I said I was concerned that CM hasn't turned the success into recruiting success, especially top IN players.  I understand it's a new landscape, but it wasn't 3-4-5 years ago when she missed on Syd, Patterson, Smith, Hull, Ali, and other top talent.

All about the money for Garzon. IU women don't have the funds they need yet to compete NIL wise.

@ribbont Looking at a list of the top girls players from Indiana since 2021 and where they matriculated to, outside of Patterson and Shade going to UCONN, I'm not sure we really missed out on much.

On paper, losing some of the girls that we did to Purdue (if we wanted them to begin with) might not have been great, but given how those careers have played out early on, maybe it was more like really good identification that a player wasn't a good fit for Teri and our program.  I'm somewhat open to the idea that Katie Gearlds just sucks as a basketball coach too.  But when the whole Reynolds clan decided to jump ship from Purdue and they couldn't get anyone better than UTSA or wherever they ended up...yeah, I'm thinking the whole family was hype and not much substance.

Somehow, reading comprehension is beyond your ability.  I didn't say exclusively IN talent.  I said "especially",  so the entire universe of talent is still included.  CM hasn't done very well,  IMO, recruiting top talent, especially IN talent.   She has been a very good coach, except against the press until last season.  She gets the most out of her talent and I have very few complaints.  The only one is her recruiting.  And maybe now, her portal recruiting. She has done well there, but it's a new world and I am not sure about this portal class.

@zekeus Garzon is the ONLY one I didn’t understand.

From reading posts at the previous place, I am under the impression that she felt she did not have the universities backing on an incident(s?). If that is indeed what occurred, I can understand.

That may have been a factor, but I'm more inclined to think it's more about money. Getting foreign players paid is complicated due to their visa status (see Edey). I'm thinking that MD was able to work around that better than we were willing/able to.

I thought I read that MD had a big Israeli booster who was willing to pay her in Israel, rather than through the school's NIL collective, which apparently avoids the restrictions.

That sounds familiar. And yes, from what I can gather, foreign students getting paid in/by their home country is the way you can get around the restrictions on earnings on a student visa.

You highlight an important detail: the restrictions in question aren't from the NCAA, they are based on current immigration law. Garzon is walking around with a social security card stamped "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT" on the front.

If you're here on a student visa you do not have permission to work for money. Or at least you can't get paid here.
