BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following a fantastic week at the plate, freshman designated hitter Owen ten Oever was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday (April 27) afternoon. During the Jeff Mercer era in Bloomington, ten Oever is the 15th different player to earn the honor. It’s the fifth-straight season that at least two IU players have been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in the same year.
During last week’s action, ten Oever was the most productive player in the IU lineup. He hit .533 in four games with eight hits, two home runs and six RBIs. He hit a grand slam in the first inning of a win over Ball State and provided his first career three-hit day in Sunday’s contest with Iowa.
Of IU’s nine starting position players over the weekend, six of them have now earned a Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor in the last two seasons. The young designated hitter joins redshirt freshman catcher Brayden Ricketts among the conference’s best young players this year. Sophomores Hogan Denny, Jake Hanley, Will Moore and Cooper Malamazian all won the award a season ago.
