Man Assembly Hall was rocking!! Would love for it to be like that again... seems like it's been awhile.

I can’t believe the fan base is finally over IU bball.  Won’t be like that again for a long time I fear.

UK was ranked No. 1. It's a rivalry game on a Saturday evening.

Yes, the fan base is not super enthusiastic right now, but that's comparing one of the best atmospheres to some of the worst. We'll see what the KState game brings. Heck, MS was not full game 1,2 or 3 this year

No students on campus. Town is dead. May not be the best atmosphere. Hopefully they perform well enough to get those on hand rowdy.

Ticket sales for tomorrow look okay.  Won’t be sold out or anything like that, but I think the crowd will be decent.

Rebuilds take time like it or not.

We are favored by about 7.

I don’t agree that rebuilds take time.  Flash back to Woodson’s first year.  Most people here were convinced that we were vastly improved from the season that ended with Miller getting fired.

that was pre NIL.

now, yes, this seems somewhat unique in that we return no players (and we had TJD back then).  But, it didn’t have to be that way.  We could have brought some players back, and we did have talent last year.  Throw in the portal and the mercenary nature of CBB and the clock is ticking.  This isn’t 1985 where you need four years to evaluate a coach.  Kids don’t stay for 4 years, and you can get a veteran player to come in and start right away (which we have several of).

this may be a rebuild, but there is no assurance that we will see results progressively improve each year under this staff.  In fact, it’s even possible that this will be his best season here.

like it or not, this is the new college basketball.

@gerdis I am talking about fan interest.  A program can’t suck for 25 years, especially the last 10, and expect sold out raucous crowds to immediately return.

As for the program, I think we should expect to make the tourney without much drama and maybe win a tourney game or two.  I think that’s a pretty high season 1 expectation.  Almost no one does better than that in season 1, even in this era.

CDD had 60 days to assemble this staff and team.  He should be able to improve year over year by showing competence on the court, which leads to more NIL and better recruiting, in addition to having players be in the program multiple years.

You still have to build a program in this era.  Going from dogshit to final four is nearly impossible.  In season 2 if we regress or aren’t consistently ranked in the top-20 I’d want CDD fired.  Of course I’m not the AD so who knows what will actually happen if he underperforms.

I'm not sure that most thought we were 'vastly improved' from the prior years. We were 9-11 in the B1G and 18-12 overall heading into the conference tourney where it took a mini-run and 2 Q1 wins to even get us into the play-in game and 12 seed in the dance. There were plenty who didn't buy into the Woodson nostalgia false narrative and knew he had no business being on the sidelines and accomplished very little while there.

We have better comps in UofL, UK and MI from last year with new coaches. Now, to be fair, those programs have all been infinitely more successful than IU the past 20+ years but the situations are close enough. 2 unproven coaches who hadn't done much of anything prior and then 1 guy who took a mid-major to a FF and did not have a long track record either.

UofL - 8 seed (Top 10 this year)

UK - 3 seed (Top 15 but dropping this year)

MI - 5 seed (Top 10 this year)

Seems reasonable enough. Get in the dance, comfortably, this year. Be a Top 15 team or so next. If we severely under-perform those then the fans will be hot and year 3 (if it happens) will need to be mega-successful to get buy-in. Like E8/FF minimum.

@gerdis could not agree more with everything you just said wrote.  IMO this could be his best year in the next several.  Trent will get better and better but we lose all the rest of the good players.

good thoughts.  Yes, I agree on all of that.  I had numerous posts comparing Millers last year to MWs first (similar KenPom).  I also echo your thoughts on the BTT.  We were getting waxed by MI, had that comeback not occurred, we weren’t going to the NCAA play in game.
