In order to succeed in any business endeavor.. I include this job as a business , you have to have a little mercenary in you. If not you'll be walked all over on.
DK is easier. It seems premature to want to get rid of Coach DD after only one year, BUT I do agree that he has the personality of a door knob. The team is reflective of the coach, i.e. Cig. IU basketball needs a Hurley type coach who gets after it with players, refs, and everyone. Some personality that's kids want to play for. The closeups of Devries during the game showed a coach sweating, wide eyed, and looking like "what do I do"?
A lot of similarities between these 2. Deer in the headlights look on the sideline and in press conferences. Zero answers or confidence. I do think DeVries is the much better coach though. Gonna be hard to turn around though without more money.
maybe he knows basketball, maybe he's got a high basketball iq... I disagree, but let's say he does. To me that's not his biggest problem. He's unable to motivate or disseminate the message to the boys and get them to the point they want to run though a brick wall for him. Nor does he communicate it in a way to keep their focus and drive alive. To me that's an assistant coach role .. is what he's giving. That to me disqualifies him from this job going forward. Simply knowing X's and O's is great and a must but definitely not the only thing this job requires. He doesn't have it. He's got the personality of a door knob. In fact since I've coined that on this forum I'm going to give him that nickname going forward. Ala Bigfoot. Doorknob can't coach and can't lead.
An interesting read, going through all of this. But, c’mon, this team just isn’t very talented. Not quick; not fast; not strong; not tall; not long; not driven; not hungry.
Do you think you could give this group of players to any of the top five coaches, whomever you think that might be, and be competitive with any of the top twenty teams in the country?
Can anyone here play this game?

Did we ever find out where D Rock came from? Is it because he has the personality of a rock?
DeVries is the one who chose these guys, so he's responsible. Whether another coach could do better with this roster is irrelevant; this debacle is on him.An interesting read, going through all of this. But, c’mon, this team just isn’t very talented. We can debate all day about what can/cannot be achieved with this roster, but I think there's probably more angst around why the roster is in the state that it is. There are reasons why its lacking, but why was this allowed to be how a new regime starts?
You finally oust Woodson, knowing its going to tick of QB and other crony donors. You know rev share is kicking in, knocking us well out of the top 5 in NIL spending, so right off the bat Dolson knew building a full roster from scratch (in a weak portal) would be daunting. What criteria was he using for the new coach?
Everything about it is the opposite of Cig. Cig had long-time assistants and he brought them all. He had a lot of experienced players and brought nearly all of them. He's gotten great NIL support as well.
What were the plans for basketball? He hired a coach who had a main assistant/recruiter who is a well known IU hater. So right off the bat, you're probably not bringing much staff with you and any players you had at WVU are tainted by the assistant. Strike 1.
You then waste a ridiculous amount of time cobbling together a full staff before you can even get deep into the portal. Strike 2.
You have no plans (or failed) to generate interest in the hire or get new financial backers to support a build from scratch. Strike 3.
You let the coach's son get market value NIL to boot, taking that money away from getting another impact player in the portal that is/was badly needed. Another strike.
You only go hard and outbid on 1 major player (Wilkerson) and bow out of any other up the anty impact guys and settle for marginal mid-major guys.
It just seems like Dolson didn't have the same criteria or plan for setting up a new staff for success and starting out with a flop isn't going to get ppl excited. What was he thinking?
Now, the reality is, we have to see how/why this staff can do better in the portal this time around. Where are they going to get more money? Why are they going to be more successful this time around? Its hard to imagine. It "could" happen, but there's no reason to think it definitely will. We are bringing in some HS recruits (and a likely re-class) and will retain a couple guys so it won't be 13 but it'll still need to be 5-6 guys with most of them being impact if the needle is to move. Still daunting with the status quo unless something changes.
DDV will get that chance, though. He's not getting fired after 1 year. 0 chance.
His buyout will be near 20 million. Thats on top of buying out Woodson last year and buying out DDV to come here. That'd be on top of buying out whomever the replacement would be, as well. The there is absolutely no chance at all that Dolson will get the ok for 30+ million to say "i goofed". So, there needs to be something happening to ensure things are better next year.
First year coach with a fully turned over roster of guys who have never played together before, only a couple with any (meager) P4 experience at all. While there are a few decent pieces, there ain't no thoroughbreds on this roster, no guys who are going to will us past our deficiencies. This wasn't going to be a good season, and short of something crazy IU won't be pulling the plug on that hire any time soon. I reckon he's gonna get 3 years...a long 3 years for some folks here.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

Cig was pure luck. People need to understand that. Dolson wanted the current MSU coach. He doesn't know what he's doing.

it was pure luck. Dolson had no idea we'd have this much success. To be fair I don't think anyone did. He completely bumblefucked the DD hire.
Fire Dolson!
I doubt anyone really thinks DK will be booted after one year. I think many, including myself, know how this will end, so we're simply ticked IU will essentially have a lame-duck coach for at least two more seasons ... and we'll have to go through the same shit yet again.
I understand the hopes and dreams, but DK isn't the guy. He'll have some good moments--and may even enjoy some modicum of success--but this regime will end like the others. Therefore, we, as fans, are stuck in limbo until the admin finally gets this right ... if it ever does.
Maybe I'm a fair weather fan, but I'd rather just see losses pile up so this can end as soon as possible. It's early, I know, but DK is a whiff. And, if I want to stick with the golf analogy, I could say IU has the yips when it comes to hiring basketball coaches.

Hope and pray that Greg McDermott wants to retire soon (I've heard rumors) and that he's allowed to pick his successor and that Pearl decides to get back into coaching for a few more years. That's about the only way I can see this turning around soon. It's likely going to be a long few years ahead.
Not hiring somewhat of an asshole was just dumb. IU has bob knight dna in it. Thats why when cig game in and said Purdue sucks but so does michhhhhhagen and ahhhhia state. I was like this guy is either fucking nuts or we got something here. IU loves a cocky ahole. Can this dude now let me hire the next coach.
Actually I've always agreed with this 100%. The whole "he's a great guy, great family man, etc" BS almost always means you're about to get your ass kicked. Whether it's DeVries, Crean, Davis, Cameron, Lynch, Allen, Pagano, Reich, etc it's always the same result. We need a stone cold killer not a family man.
We need someone like Chris Beard or Bruce Pearl.
And that's why I can say dd will not be successful here. Door knob personality and exciting as a rock. That doesn't cut it at iu. Plus his talent evaluation was awful. He really has nothing to sell recruits this spring so unless he can outbid everyone I dont expect his portal class will be all that great. Of course he will get three years cause that's what iu does but we all know how this ends.

Bingo we know he gets three years and the ceiling is probably ncaa bubble and maybe one tourney win max. We know how it ends yet we have to sit through three years of it
