That is why I was never that high on Ben McCollum he won alot but it was D2. I know some were convinced he was a sure fire home run hire but there is simply no proof he could win at this level. I think it is far more likely he is the next Fran than the next Tom Izzo.

Sure, not sure fire at all. But he lost fewer games in year one at Drake then DeVries lost every year there. Including one McCollum loss being in the final 32 of the NCAA. And McCollum has a personality.

McCollum is the Cignetti and Deboer model. Sure his wins, and theirs, were at lower levels, but winning BIG and winning titles, is not the same as just nice records. Those title winning guys are who you want.

I'm OK with who we got. I just don't understand why we pass on guys who won big, or won championships in basketball, at lower levels. When we have proof from football is you are supposed to find the big winners.

I was really only going by the articles on McCollum saying other coaches were very high on him for years and would call him to pick his brain. For DeVries all I hear is 'hard working' . I hope he's a big winner though.

Oh I would have taken him over DD for sure but I had other guys I wanted above both of them. DD was not even on my list honestly. I just get this weird feeling dolson zoned in on DD long ago and had tunnel vision regarding the hire.

Yeah. Same feeling. I'm nearly sure it's the way it went down. Scott sat on the sidelines of a couple games of theirs and fell in love...

OK, I'm done on this issue. Our guy is our guy. He's pretty good. Hopefully the admin can help get the program at a higher level. Carr was promised they say to DeVries as a position when DeVries was hired. So that sounds good.

My god, are we going to go through every situation in the history of college basketball in which a coach struggled the first few seasons but got things rolling? This is Indiana; it doesn't happen that way.

In the NIL era, I'd say that Indiana is one of 20 or so programs where it COULD happen.

There isn't enough sample size for something like this, but I doubt there is a program consistently spending top NIL dollars without seeing a major positive return on things. It only takes a couple homeruns to build a winner at a high level in college basketball. From there, success begets success.

@gros-louis Don’t agree with you often, but you’re spot on here.  The elite players aren’t hung up on the design of Assembly Hall, names on the back of jerseys, candy stripes, or any other extraneous bullshit that the fanboys like to obsess about. What matters is coaching, player development, winning,… and MONEY.

Not putting the name of the back of the jerseys in this day and age is one of the dumbest arguments I ever heard.  I think sampson mentioned it lots of  the fan base were ready to run him out of town for even giving it a mention.  Are we still honestly tryin to live in the glory of 1976 still?

@arioznahoosier4554 With the portal and half the roster or more changing every year I don't care about names on the jerseys. Might help learn who they are before they are gone.

Our NIL is nothing special anymore. We spent 10 million last year and 20+ other programs did as well

I do think brand recognition plays into it. For the most part, I think that's why Duke has gotten some of the guys they've landed under Jon Scheyer. Top level NIL money obviously plays a big part in that as well, but I think if there are equal offers, someone is going to pick a Duke, UNC, Kansas, etc over a program that is just swinging for the fences. I still think IU would be considered a top tier brand in college basketball, but the NIL commitment has to be there.

All that said, I still think it's up to DeVries to sell these kids on coming to IU. NIL money can put him and IU in a car that can compete with top programs, but he still needs to drive and race the car.

DD can't do that.  That's the current issue

Isn't the jury still out on that one? I mean, he's only been here one year.

Yeah no doubt I did not even have any idea who Miles was the first few times I saw him in a game.

You are correct. We never get it rolling.

Which is why a few years would be OK. If it's rolling.

IU has been piss-poor in the NIL era, sans the TJD/JHS season. I thought this was a weak hire from the get-go ... even before DD recruited a single player (sans his DNA recruit). I'm not at all saying "I told you so" after one season, but I haven't seen anything to make me think otherwise.

I'd bet anyone IU will NOT have single-digit losses next season. I don't even need to know the roster makeup.

I noticed we count losses differently. Wed have to be 25-7 right now to ensure ending up with single digit losses. Id be very pleased with that in year two or even three. Thats a contender.

You had asked (different thread) about 23-9 multiple times in a row, if some of us would be satisfied, which could end up at 11 losses and at least 10 losses unless a national title. Still a 5 game improvement, so yeah - for next year.

Good call, so let me clarify: I was referring to regular season only.
