I won't lie to you...I'm pretty sad about this one. Jalen Haralson is going to either North Carolina, Ohio State or Tennessee (he'd be a great fit there). I know his asking price is very high and he's currently a non-shooter that would have been a weird fit for DDV's system but he's a good player and I enjoy watching him play. Deciding Haralson is not worth the money he wants is fine but you darn sure better have a good plan that you can execute.

I do think IU is in great shape with Jaeden Mustaf, Darren Harris seems like a very winnable recruitment and Markus Burton is a guy you'd have to feel great about landing if he gets to his IU visit tomorrow without committing to Houston. Indiana was mentioned by On3 as being a potential option for Eric Reibe (although USC might be favored) and Duke transfer Nikolas Khamenia so we'll see if those go anywhere.

Burton is great but the rest all just feels underwhelming.

Hard to say until we see him play. Yes he is highly ranked but so was miles rice and Carlyle. They were both to 25 portal players and the offseason hype on them was alot of best backcourt in the big ten. Both came from losing programs like burton. Im just to the point after woodsons best class money can buy year to where I need to see it on the court now

Just assuming, pay the bucks for 5 portal guys: Burton, Harris, Mustaf, Sherrell, & Tiller.

Sisley & Acimovic plus the 3 frosh -- Alexander-Moody, Manhertz & Karvala.

Bring back the 3 walk-ons from last year and call that your 13.

Could this work? I'll let the coaching staff figure that out.

The major downside bench depth and experience. The starting line-up would probably need to play 160 of the 200 total game minutes.

No idea who tiller is but thay starting 5 would need to play the whole game most likely. Iu would probably have to spend 7 million just to get Burton and sherill. But if all we got is 14 million it will take half to get two good players

@openwheel -  Underwhelming when compared to last seasons team.

athletically, it’s the exact opposite of last year.

so who's the 3 pt shooter of the bunch ?

Rice and Carlyle were the biggest disappointments of the Woody portal haul. Those guys got worse under the tutelage of Big Foot.

I think ideally IU needs at least 7 from the portal. Spend the bucks for the best starters you are able to sign and then get a ball handler and another big guy. That hypothetical roster I threw out was sort of a worst case scenario. IU better get more than 5 players from the portal if they expect to improve upon the disappointment of 2025-26.

Bryson Tiller looks like he could develop into a good college player. He's 6'11" and around 250. Highly sought recruit ranked in the 30s. Just played his freshman season at Kansas: 8 ppg & 6.2 rebounds per game.

Yep 7would work- would also like to see IU  continue to develop Sisley and the incoming frosh, and hope Acemovic can provide some minutes   Maybe if they play, they will stay? Or hope like hell the 1 time transfer goes into place August 1

this season, with these portal guys having more than 1 yr, will be vital keeping all of our guys only way to avoid these rebuilds every friggin season

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get jazzed over visits. Wake me up when there's actually a signing.

I think dd is a better coach than Woodson so he should do better if he gets a similair roster my reason for not getting super jazzed on portal rankings is rice and Carlyle aren't doing any better since they left iu. Or even Tucker really. Burton sounds like a nice player just not from a winning program. At least sherill comes from a winning program assuming we get him. Sounds like a done deal but I've heard that before.

If we really only have 14 million you still probably have to spend like 9 million on three guys and hope they stay healthy. You have to have some studs period. In reality you only need 7 guys to play so its doable without injuries. Really no need for 13 guys you can practice walk ons maybe go with 10 grants

athletically, it’s the exact opposite of last year.

so who's the 3 pt shooter of the bunch ?

harris didn’t play enough to know but made 3s in hs. i like him as a 6’6 wing.

mustaf shot 39% on 2 per game.

burton is a career 33% on 4 per game and an 85% ft shooter so maybe his numbers return closer to his ‘24 38%.

sherrell is 6’10, 255 and is 34% in his career from 3.

i think this is a good baseline and they’re also not done adding. devries absolutely wants more shooting or i think he’d have pushed harder to add haralson. olsen was a done deal until florida offered 1.5m.

if iu had burton, mustaf and sherrell to go along with tucker and lamar, we’re looking at possibly a 2nd weekend from a talent perspective, im my opinion.

i’m not asking you to be positive for positivities sake, but i like the guys they’re rumored with and think those 4, even without other additions being known, would be a massive talent and athleticism upgrade over year 1.

Is there any downside to the strategy of spending 20 million but telling everyone you spent 12?

How are the big donors looking at the next 12 months?

We are going to need 3 or 4 Oline, a QB,  a DT, and a LB in the '27 portal in January.

Possibly a WR as well if we have two first rounders playing this season.

This is probably a Mr Obvious type assessment… but I think players “5 thru 9” or so will be hugely consequential this year.  If we do end up getting Burton, Mustaf, Harris, and Sherrill…that is obviously a great haul, and I think an improvement in top end talent versus last years group.  But it is NOT any sort of perfect core lineup.  Burton is not a perfect PG, for a good high major.  Mustaf and Harris are solid, but not likely NBA level wings.  Sherrill appears to be emerging, but he is not, in any way, a dominant big, and I question if he’ll be an NBA big down the road.

Adding Sisley and the frosh we have to that group does compliment it well, it seems.  But I still think we’d need another couple bigs, athleticism, another primary ball handler, and some shooting.  Finding guys that can do multiples of those things, at a high major level, won’t be easy or cheap.

A versatile, skilled, foreign big would be enormous.  As would an anchor 5 like a Reibe.

A buddy down in UCONN land told me Reibe's playing time declined as the season progressed because he often got lost on the court defensively. That's a somewhat a normal tendency for freshmen so I'd expect improvement. Sherrill was a highly talented and recruited kid coming out of high school. Fans tend to overhype players but the reality is he just completed his sophomore year with an 11.1 ppg and 6.2 rpg in about 24 minutes per game. Good, not a dominant force but a young player that should get better.

I guess we'll know much more in the following days as to what kind of haul DeVries will get from the portal. With DeVries, Carr and the cast of experienced coaches plus an adequate budget they should be able to build some kind of competitive team.

Eerily quiet for a day with how many guys on campus, 3, 4?  Im about to go dark myself watching the Masters for 5 straight hours.

Im not nearly as jacked about Burton as our PG, as many others are.  But relative to where we’ve been recently, getting him would be a good sign, and I’d be excited about it.  Burton, Mustaf, Harris would be a solid backcourt.  But those expecting Burton to have a Landeborg, or even a Cadeau like impact, because of his numbers at ND, will be let down.  He can score at all 3 levels, but he isn’t overly efficient at any of them.  And he has never been a guy that “runs an offense”…not at Penn, not at ND.  And he isn’t a very physical or effective lead defender.   If he ends up as our PG, CDD will need to surround him with physicality, ball movers, and defenders…to compete with the upper half of the conference that is.  Mustaf will help, haven’t seen enough of Harris to know if he would too.

we are in agreement. They are improvements but we aren't going very far with this group without adding the other pieces you mentioned.  And I was also going to  ask if we've gotten any commits yet.  Tick Tock
