Unrelated to the portal but Vaughn Karvala looks great right now on ESPN2 at the Chipotle Nationals.

Singleton in the portal now (from NW).  I'd like a singleton/Cooper combo please.

If IU isn’t prepared to spend big in the portal they might as well shut the program down because it would be clear they aren’t interested in winning a title. They got outbid repeatedly last year for good talent.

NIL is from individuals so if they are not donating what could IU do about it?

As of early morning April 3 a little less than 500 players are in the portal. Graduate students and coaching change are dominant reasons allowing players pre-April 7 entry. The regulated April 7 through April 21 portal will add another 1500 or so names to the portal. Be ready for the explosion early next week as I'm certain there will be a few big surprises.

Not sure what budget has to do with anything.  This isn’t the NBA.  IU boosters outbid Kansas boosters for players before , and it will happen again.  I think IU fans have a complete misunderstanding on how this works.  It’s not like Indiana University has a defined pool of money to spend on basketball.  While it’s true that revenue sharing does mean that the school does pay a portion of the payroll, the majority of the money is paid by boosters.  IU has as big of an alumni base as any school.   Corporate boosters can easily throw inordinate amounts of money at players these days.

anyone that says if “IU” pays a player $4 million that they are using some high percentage of the total “budget” has no idea what they are talking about.  One donor could easily throw $5 million at multiple players without blinking an eye.  There is no set budget.

I have no idea how IU does next year.  But, one thing I’m very confident on is that if IU stumbles it won’t have a thing to do with boosters not willing to pony up enough money to pay players. I predict IU has one of the highest paid teams out there next year. IU boosters can easily throw together a Kentucky like roster.  If IU doesn’t end up with a roster like that, it doesn’t mean that the boosters weren’t willing to pay up.

The Bidunga ship has sailed on for IU. Can't wait while he tests the NBA waters. The Hoosiers need to concentrate on solving their lack of Bigs problem and fill it was early as they can in the portal process.

If the people with the kind of money it takes to increase an offer by multiple millions don't want to part ways with said money, for whatever reason, then we won't have funny money to throw around.

I would think so.  I don't know how we could 'afford' to wait on his NBA decision, which would be devastating were he to choose the NBA.

On another site, the referenced rumor was that Kansas offered him $3M, and he said he'd need $4 or 4.5M.  $ might even be doable (right?), but not unless we were sure of his intention not to go to the NBA.

Under the circumstances, I like the idea of trying to get two bigs for $5M, given that some of these guys only play 20-25M/game for their present teams (eg..Fru, 22M).

One other thought....these waters are treacherous.  I'm liking the Carr addition more & more.  Someone has to figure this crap out.

I would think landing a couple difference makers would do possibly 2 things:

1. Would garner interest from other portal players.. the chances or commitment to winning and hence peaks interest

2. would engage more interest from donors with some measure of hope of winning.  Hence more money which is what will be needed for more players.

Not a silver bullet solution but it can't hurt.  Getting a little momentum never hurts

@tjinman1987 that’s not true.  And taking those two guys screams a Kentucky like, just add talent at all costs, type approach.  They’re both ball dominant.  Haralson might fit CDDs offensive style better than Burton does, but neither are ideal fits.  Haralson has a bad rep as maybe not being the best teammate.  And Burton is one of the more ball dominant guards in the country.  And small, and not physical.  He’ll score in the B10, but could be a liability in other areas.

It might cost 7-8 million bucks to get both those guys.  There have to be A LOT of duos we could get for that money, or less, that I would be more excited about.

If I had to pick, I’d want Haralson.  And I’d pair him with a PG that’s maybe more of a facilitator and/or just a guy that is comfortable deferring to others.  Dixon from UNC maybe.  Dixon, Wooley, Haralson would be an example of a good, physical, guard/wing core…and I’d substitute Haralson for Vaaks or someone like him, especially if Vaaks is less money.  And use the extra money on bigs.

If you sign both Burton and Haralson, it’s a sign, to me, you’re really not thinking enough about building a cohesive team.  Just adding talent from Indiana guys that would come for enough money.

any combo of 3 of the 4 highlighted players would cost 8m+ and probably closer to 10m given the numbers being thrown about. that doesn't leave a lot of money for bigs or literally anyone else, for that matter.

i completely agree with this.

iu got a late start last year but also, was reportedly, caught flat footed by teams spending well beyond the legal "cap" set forth by the ncaa. they appear to have thought teams were just going to not spend past that number and the top teams did. michigan spent more than iu. kentucky more than doubled what iu reportedly spent (around 10m).

it's not my money, but if iu and it's donors want high level basketball, they're going to need to write some big checks because 12m seems like a starting point for next season.

I'd love to see a roster that can compete with ranked teams. I'm so sick and tired of IU getting run out of the gym multiple times per season.

IU's record wasn't great, but that's not what bothers me; it's the manner of defeat. Aside from getting smoked several times, the Hoosiers buckled down the stretch. DD seriously needs to improve the program's trajectory ... like now. DD won't get canned after next season, but another like this one and his seat will be scorching entering Year 3.

Tj Inman said IU would have between $16-$18 million to spend on a roster this off-season. That should be more than enough to build a good roster.

@ge-off I'm kind of on the same track with him.  Especially since it sounds like he's going to be astronomically expensive.  Notre Dame was REALLY bad this past year... spending half your entire budget on Burton and Haralson... while it sounds fun and exciting to get guys with their talent, and Indiana kids at that... the goal is building a winning basketball team... not sure it would be a wise approach.

Agree 100%! I just do not think JH is about winning - more about himself -Maybe he has matured and is a great teammate and leader? Not worth 3-4mil to find out!

He is going to cost 4 million

Yes and probably close to $8M to get 2 B1G quality bigs which is a must.  If a big donor wants to step up go for it.  Otherwise probably too expensive.

Are any of woodson's big money buddies still around or did they all switch to football now?

They donate to the Sacramento Kings now.

Lol probably. They sure did all they could to try and make woodson keep his job and still could not make it happen.
