I felt Yigitoglu while good (And looked a bit soft and slow last year, so no surprise on that report) was still a bit of 'the best we can do right now' while other just as high end or higher bigs were snapped up around us. Although we did well, mainly since we got Sherrell.
Yigi did have a hell of a highlights package. Good marketing there........
Edit....but I will say, when I had a chance to watch tape from extended play, I was as excited about him.

Do I want to inject or transfuse Shawn Kemp athleticism into Sherrill? Yes I do.
It will be a test of the players around Yigi to improve their passing and the passing windows they use along with his ability to catch passes with more velocity and with him moving toward open space burying defenders deep, and with him knowing what he wants to do upon the catch.
He was jumping out to meet passes instead of using his hip and ass to keep the defender locked up and shielded to hold his space.
To me, this will smooth out through experience playing together, so not a concern at this time.
@thehoosierhuddle Burton has never been an end to end speedster. Shifty, very quick in bursts in the half court, elite level finisher, even at his size. But he isn't going to be a plus defender, and he isn't going to push the pace all that much. I've watched him play since middle school. He's one of the most un guardable guards, at the high school level, I've ever seen. But I have concerns about him leading a successful high major team at the point guard position. Hope he proves those concerns wrong, for IU.

6. Quick high lease on Darren Harris's shot confirmed.
He has a zero dip load up like Klay Thompson. Doesn't need to bring the ball down into the pocket.
How was his defense?
I didn't know Burton until we got him and watched his highlights. I didn't see him beating people off the dribble either, but what I saw was he finished. Did just fine shielding people with his body and still making the shot while getting pushed or bumped hard.
So I didn't think we were getting Isiah Thomas...
Just a solid intelligent guard.

He broke his ankle early December '25. My friend Wiki says it can take 9-12 months to get all the way back for a high impact sport like bball. Any MDs on here?

I guess it wasn't a fracture? Because although he had surgery, he's been completely cleared medically..........The stories I saw did not specify the injury.
@mushroomgod Just because you're cleared medically does not mean you're back to 100% of what you were. You have to relearn how to trust the ankle and build back muscle that has atrophied. Rehab is not the same as an offseason in the weight room.

@mushroomgod Sisley was fine. He showed good instincts and can be a weapon off the bench. He may not be the All-Big Ten player people hoped for, but he looked more comfortable last night.
Samet was disappointing to be honest. He looked unathletic and slow. His fundamentals and toughness weren't there last night. Maybe that changes, but he's not a freshman.
Burton looked slow, but maybe that is him getting back to full speed after his injury.
Overall, this team is more talented and deeper, but there were some concerns coming out of last night (even if it's just July).
That's pretty much my take on things.
I think to really be a 'surprise' team Samet has to be better, especially more athletic, than he's going to turn out to be. I think he was overrated in the portal.
That said, his game is very compatible with that of Sherrill. I think that was his main attraction ti IU.
I'd like to hear from posters who've watched Burton a lot in the past, as to whether he looked noticeably slower last night. Never having watched him, my impression was that he was not all that quick, which surprised me.
I do like the versatility of Lindsay, Harris, Moody, and hoping for more of the same from Mustaf.
You could tell from the highlights that the other team was awful. So.....a 15 point lead after 3 quarters, even horsing around with the lineup as we did, was somewhat concerning. It goes to what I saw as a lack of explosiveness, overall.
I do see upside, but I wonder if CDD is the guy to maximize it. One thought I've had since last night is.......what would the Wisconsin coach be able to do with this roster?
I saw him play a few times with SMU when I was watching some late night bbal last year. I just remember him being big but nothing stuck out other than that I do not recall him dominating or anything like that. Portal rankings are tricky to say the least I mean look at the two Miles Rice and the other one woodson got both were ranked top 25 portal and both were not that good at all. I noticed he was ranked like 35th but did not put too much stock in it figured it was likely because he was so tall.
From what I heard in alot of the podcasts was that Burton can drive and facilitate the offense well enough. Still a little early to say we have a knock down shooter but one of the most overlooked stats was that we created 17 turnovers and sherrell got 3 nice blocks in. And if you look at Burtons stat line, I think he played less than 20 minutes. Heard the freshman were impressive and let’s hope they (and others) stay around for more than just 1 year

Can't say I watched enough of any one player long enough on D to offer a characterization, especially given the unknown value of the Canadian's skill/talent level.
The 17 or whatever steals indicated to me that their anticipation, awareness, and IQ, important aspects of D, were favorable.
@middawg it’s one game in July, but the defense looked better than last year especially after the first 5 minutes. Just more athletic

To be fair Peter Jurkin had a good highlight reel also. Anyone can look good in a highlight reel.
