Here is my issue when they fired crean they said they wanted someone to compete for national championships so they went out and hired archie  who was not proven at a high level. Might as well have kept crean honestly.  Yes DD can probably do ok like I think Fran at Iowa did but probably not much more. Maybe I just need to accept it but I saw Sampson come in and win right away. The second year he was like 22-3 before shit came out and they canned him. He was cooking and its pointless to argue the guys he brouht in etc  but he went to a nobody houston school and is killing it. The fact is really good coaches win right away they dont need three years, especially in the nil era.

To me the type of guy IU needed was a guy like Chris Beard but too many complained about his past, etc and how he isnt doing that great this year. But he has the personality and at IU I think he would have done great. I would have said May but they already screwed that one up.

Yes, Fred Glass said "The expectations for Indiana University basketball are to perennially contend for and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep into the NCAA tournament, and win our next national championship — and more after that"

We've never even sniffed those goals since Crean was fired. Glass thought Miller was a "20 year guy" for IU when he hired him and most of the critics agreed. But in retrospect, I'd have taken 8 more years of Tom Crean over the results of Miller and Woodson. Crean might have actually been decent in the NIL era, he had good results when he had high-level players. And he did have energy and charisma, even if it was sort of spastic.

I have no firm opinion yet on DD. Certainly isn't the start we hoped for but he'll get a chance to get it corrected.

@surjay - great post-  I would also add President PW is also big in having excellent athletics.  If DD cannot get this done, they will not hesitate to move on.

I would also add to the win now crowd- look at at what Josh Schertz is doing g yr 2 at St Louis!  He had a rough start so let’s hope our guy has the same results

Crean was beyond awful at Georgia and will never coach again.

He'd be a disaster in the portal era. He already recruited over half his team every year without a portal and NIL. There would be yearly roster chaos with him.

He's too manic and has no consistency on or off the court running a program. He couldn't even set regular practice times and let his wife dictate our schedule.

I know, and I'm only saying I'd prefer him in retrospect if the alternative was 8 years of Miller/Woodson.

But, he did win the B1G outright, had 3 Sweet 16 appearances, and roster chaos is sort of the new normal now. I'm not certain it would have been a disaster.

Agree. Our admin wants to win.

I cant see us cutting bait before end of year 3. Partly due to financials. Have to at least give the appearance of responsibility.

And year three is about right anyway. Every coach deserves that much. Unless its really off.

STL might have the weakest schedule in Division I up to this point; it's pathetic. And JS was 19-15 last season. I'd much rather have Door Knob.

He's clearly a good coach.  What he did at that middle of nowhere D2 school was pretty impressive.  Not sure it would translate to the B1G though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm seeing after March 15,2026 his buyout would be 8m?

No, thats what DDV would owe IU if he were to leave. IU owes him 80% of his full salary if he's fired without cause regardless of year, so subtract his yearly and you basically get:

18m this year

14m next year

10m after year 3.

The assistants also have buyouts of somewhere in the range of 200k a piece.

So, its not going to be cheap anytime soon. Especially since they had to pay Woodson a lump sum to get lost last year, on top of the 6m they paid to buyout DDV from WVU (on top of buying out Archie 4 years ago).

Sisley hasnt impressed me as the kind of high end ball player I had sort of hoped for. Just a frosh but can always see flashes from high end guys. But I hope and probably expect he will be a quality shooter and decent all around guy as he improves. Just thinking on how much athletic talent we are going to need.
