According to Jeff Rabjohns of peegs.com, IU is hosting a new event that will replace the more traditional Hoosier Hysteria. On Thursday, October 2, IU will host an outdoor event between the 300 to 500 blocks of Kirkwoood Avenue that will include skills competitions, player introductions and player meet and greets on outdoor basketball courts. This will occur from 8 to 10 pm and will include both the men's and women's teams.
Commentary: seems like a cool idea and a good chance to connect with students and hopefully increase student enthusiasm ahead of the season.

What are they gonna do, a halfcourt shot contest from the Upstairs Lounge to Nicks?
I like it. HH was getting stale and if you wanna see the team we’ve got exhibitions vs Baylor in Indy and Marian in Bloomington.
It's different/original and a chance to connect with the students (positives).
It could get rained out and it also shuts down a lot of opportunity for non-students (young kids and out of towners) to attend an event for free. (negatives).
And screw Rabjohns.
I do think some people just love going to AH, and those people will be bummed.
@tammany Hope it works. Sounds goofy to me, and I would assume pretty much eliminates it as a recruiting tool.
I don’t know for sure, but these HH-type events don’t seem like recruiting tools that make a difference anymore.
If CDD wanted HH for recruiting, he would have kept it.
Maybe I’m wrong. Just a guess.
Sounds hokey to me but I'm getting old ..: maybe the kids will love it.
@tammany I'd agree, but it would seem from the outside, they can still be used as a recruiting tool, IF you can get the top flight kids to visit. Official visits are way more important, but I think any time you can get kids on campus and show them a good time and they leave with a positive vibe, it's beneficial.
@hoosiers94 I get that because I am 60 and becoming an old fart too. I don't really get this idea.
While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon

I feel the same, but also, this year seems like a true break and "do over" in the IU basketball program. It's a totally different program now that what I saw 30 years ago. And I agree, maybe people want something like this to change and try something new.
Knight would hold a regular practice at midnight, as allowed, because that was the earliest they could start the season. He would address the student body with a speech and Q&A with students in the auditorium.

Per Rabjohns, they also are planning a more "conventional" Midnight Madness type open practice and scrimmage at AH.
"The idea at the moment is for there to be multiple events that incorporate many of the various elements of previous Hoosier Hysteria events — fun and glitz with Hoosier Hoops on Kirkwood, a basketball scrimmage at Assembly Hall, and perhaps a second event at Assembly Hall geared toward fun for the kids."
For those that lamented or "did not get" the announcement of the event on Kirkwood...the next night, IU will have an open scrimmage at Assembly Hall. The open scrimmage will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday, October 3.
I don't know how long the scrimmage will be but it will be a traditional "Cream vs. Crimson" setup.
