Illinois shoots a ton of 3's and plays a modern offense. Underwood is a good coach but went through some difficult times as well during his tenure.
Who's to say DeVries can't be next here and follow in similar footsteps? He runs a similar system and IU has more money.
I know this is always the vision with IUBB every season, but Illinois' run does bring confidence that we're closer than we think.

LOL I mean sure but you need to hire a great coach and be serious first. We have not been serious in 30 years. We are not close at all these teams are light years ahead of us. Both Michigan and Illinois would beat us by 20-30 points right now the way they are playing.
@arioznahoosier4554 I'd say the hires we've been making recently to support DeVries and the program could pay off huge dividends.
Also, Underwood's first two seasons at Illinois were awful

@arioznahoosier4554 Sure, right now we'd lose by a ton, but 80% of rosters change every season. I'm just saying, Illinois' example brings me a bit of hope

I do not care about his first two seasons and that was pre nil anyway. All I know is we are not close right now and until I see it on the court it does not matter we have had hope for 26 years and got nothing.
@arioznahoosier4554 Underwood is a very good coach, but he's had quite a lot of luck with this particular roster. He hit the lottery when his son stumbled on Wagler, and convinced his dad to offer him, without seeing him play live. And then there were people in his Illinois program that established some very good connections in Europe a couple years ago, and that's paid big dividends. All things are relative though, and he does deserve the credit for orchestrating it all, and coaching them well this year. But I suspect if CDD had Wagler, and 2-3 NBA level Euros... he'd do pretty darn well with them.
Maybe Prince will be IU's Wagler.

But unless your Duke or Kansas its always going to take some luck to build a final four roster. Whether or not DD can get that kind of roster who knows but there are alot of good coaches in the big ten right now and they will all be looking to upgrade. I see Minnesota has already had two of their better players say they are returning.
Is DeVries now recruiting Europe?@arioznahoosier4554 Sure, right now we'd lose by a ton, but 80% of rosters change every season. I'm just saying, Illinois' example brings me a bit of hope

Frankly, he comes off as a pretty gross guy (like Keady but even grosser), but his players seem to like him and his teams play hard. And he can recruit, somehow. I don't think he's 'elite' but he is probably top 20 or so nationally.
The Illinois basketball coach always looks like he is a top man in the Teamsters.
