But some of the attempts he got fouled on, and then one of the misses that he got blocked, the takes did look a little weak. But given the stats he actually recorded, I wouldn't say its definitive yet that he'll struggle to finish, all the time, in the B10. And then we have no idea what we actually paid for Bailey. And the going rate for any all conference level tall person, let alone one of the better tall people from a fairly high level conference like the A10... lets just say most bigs were overpriced. So did we overpay? Or were bigs just overvalued in general. Bailey was gonna get a bag from a high major, without question.
Agree to an extent with Conerway. I thought the entire team loosened up more than I would have liked to see after the game was no longer in any doubt. There were moments though, that it was pretty obvious why Conerway was Sun Belt POY. I don't like that it appeared he needed outside motivation to dial himself in. But when he did...he was dominant. There was a sequence at the end of the first half, where it appeared he and Pissis were jawing with each other. Pissis is a pretty darn good guard, and Conerway made him look really, really bad for the last couple minutes of the half. I suspect when we play legit teams on our scheduled, we'll see a more dialed in Tayton. Like he was for most of the Baylor game.
Enright has proven he's quite a lot higher level player than a walk on...both at Drake and at DePaul. I'll agree with Cav, and you, that for a B10 contending team, he isn't a starting guard. But he's a solid player. He provided energy. He moves the ball well. There's nothing wrong with having guys like him, Leal, Cupps, etc... on scholarship at IU. The problem comes when they have to start, and be relied upon to play 20+ minutes per game. No need to slam them though for that... When Dorn and Harris, and maybe even Drake or Ristic get healthy, he'll be a much needed energy/spark guy off the bench, I'm sure.
Lastly, while our offense got very loose, at times. It was always spread, the passing was incredible, and we have multiple guys that inside 25-28 feet, if they're open, its literally never a bad shot. Wilkerson let a couple fly from too deep. But we took 34 two's, and 24 threes. Many of the two's were dunks or layups because of how well spaced we were, and how effective we were shooting from the outside. It wasn't a Horse contest, it was beautiful, effective offense, for the most part. Weird you didn't enjoy it. Maybe the double post, single side ISO bullshit we've seen for the last 4 years is more your speed. If so, yeah, this team probably won't be your cup of tea.
Enright...I did say "good" walk-on. Do you think he's a better player than the McRoberts kid we had back in the day? I don't. In any event it goes to the ceiling the team has. Its not personal.
The passing was good. The unselfishness was good. But I don't want any player to have an absolute green light. 2-3 bad shots in a game are the difference between a good team and a championship team. Back in the day when the 3 pointer was new I saw Pitino's team school IU in Louisville....they were a machine getting their shots. I knew he would win a championship at UK. Are you getting those vibes with CDD, or are you getting the 'nice-guy, players like him, fans like him, it will be fun to watch' vibes? A reporter once asked Knight about whether he wanted Alford being confident about shooting a particular shot. Knight said he didn't give a damn whether Alford was confident, HE wanted to be confident.

Doug McDermott was on the Field of 68 right after the hire was announced and he said DeVries is easily the most competitive person he's ever been around. Doesn't really come across that way to me but maybe he's one of those silent killers.

I thought we played a very good game offensively. Moved well, hit shots, made the correct reads and passes, converted at the foul line.
Defensively, we were caught out of position too many times and it led to reaching and fouling. For me..that was the negative

i was curious for your take because I found myself in conflict with the universally rosy reviews in the game thread. You let me down being so positive.....I feel cranky today so here goes....
I'll first agree with some of the positives mentioned......I always thought Alexis was the 'steal' of our portal 'draft'. I have no reservations with him, except that I wish, with his game, that he was 6 10. I hope he's a legit 6 9 because that guy he was playing against last night looked like a horse in comparison. But he's a gamer.
I agree with North that Baily is more athletic and springy than expected. He's also a good passer and FT shooter. However, I think he will be a non-factor as an outside shooter. He took few 3s last year as the center of D's offense. And he had trouble last night on several occasions finishing against a good HS team while they were still competing. His ability to drive to the basket and finish against good defenses is doubtful. His ability to defend in the post and to grab contested rebounds is also doubtful. I question his ability to be effective against higher level competition. With his height and skills I think he'll be fine against bad and mediocre teams. We overpaid for the guy.
I was disappointed with Conerway's play, but more especially CDD's reactions to his play. There were 4-6 completely ridiculous passes/pass attempts. I expected him to be a serious player. CDD had had months to work with the guy and this is the result? I thought he was underrated in the portal rankings. He wasn't. How was that guy Sun Belt P of the Y?
Enright moves well, moves the ball well, and plays hard. He would make a great walk-on.
This board has WDS (Woodson Derangement Syndrome). Everyone is "We're going to shoot lots of 3s, we're going to be fun to watch, we'll play hard...." That will get you to 6th place in the BT by year 3. You can shoot lots of 3s and still have some discipline with it within your offense. The BT race is not a HORSE competition. Not sold on CDD....at all. But I'm a victim of the CIG effect. I don't see this guy have the drive, the gravitas, to get it done. On the Bob Knight-Tom Crean scale he's about half way.

I went looking for some of Bailey's highlights, because what I remembered was a lot of getting off quick spins and bank shots, from just outside where the post defenders could easily get to it. But now only seeing a few. Most of his finishes last year were good moves but close to the rim. All outside or right under. So the fear he may get stuffed in the big ten could be real. And he gets stripped of the ball now and then too.
I really like him, but hoping he does have a midrange game we haven't seen. His highlights he has a bit of that, but usually doesn't have to pull up short because he does get all the way to the rim. He'll need more variety in the b1g. Although I think he'll find ways to finish.
Too anxious and proud? Jesus. It's Alabama a&m. You learn nothing from this game, unless it's close, and it wasn't.

yeah. Act like you've been there before. Like the varsity yucking it up cause they beat the freshman b team. Shit I hope so. What they did last night is what they were supposed to do and nothing more. I'm not getting all excited about that.

@openwheel I believe Devries can deliver championship teams that IU fans want if his recruiting takes traction, and he attracts the front court that it takes for any team to compete at an elite level. I don't think they would have to be elite because I think he has a good system (motion offense) and values shooters that look for the post to get open. What it will take for him to reach the next level is to convince bigs that they can excel and be outstanding in his system. If we would have had a good (not necessarily outstanding) post presents last night they would have filled their stat sheets quite well. As with any new coach that doesn't arrive with great NCAA history we will have to wait and see if he coaches for final fours or just coaches to keep his job.
