@arioznahoosier4554 Crean was fired one year after winning the conference and making a S16.
Archie, yes he got too long but there was also the pandmic that threw everything into chaos.
Woodson, yes he got too long (should never have been hired) but he had a friend who was Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
I think Devries will get closer to the Crean treatment than Woodson. Patience with the program has got to be tissue-thin now, at least amongst those who remember what it once was.
was it an inability or could it have been he was battling Sampson and Izzo? The high school kids DeVries signed are as you wrote, all top ranked recruits. A major shortcoming is he has yet to win any recruiting battles for big men. The two most recent high school losses were Ethan Taylor to Michigan State and Arafan Diane to Houston. In the portal recruitment last April, Bailey and Alexis were the 2 bigs signed and we know how that worked. Acimovic came in as a freshman and wasn't able to find his way off the bench.Im a little confused. DD cannot close or recruit, yet his first IU class is currently top 20? He kept Sisley and got LW over UK?
My question is, how did he do the above but had this bad team? Maybe the guys he got were what was left after the top dudes were taken? I really don't know. As has been mentioned, we will see here in the next few weeks once the portal opens - I wish they reported actual numbers for each team, that should be public knowledge right?
Again, my belief in DD has taken a 180, so this post is not defending him - just pointing out some observations related to building a team.
Could be a major challenge to get bigs from the portal as it appears a big paycheck is basically DeVries selling point. He doesn't have the Dusty May big man development stories to tell (Vlad Goldin, Andy Mara, Morez Johnson, Lendebourg).
Will the high school recruits coming in next year be able to contribute? Trevor Manhertz is a 6'9" 185# finesse type player and Vaughn Karvala is 6'7" and weighs 180. Will these two be physically capable of playing in the Big 10 as freshmen? Interesting to note that in an interview after the Northwestern loss, Trent Sisley spoke about his need to get stronger.
Never quite know how all the recruiting translates to college play. Perhaps the best high schooler coming in next year might be Prince Alexander-Moody the 6'4" guard from Maryland.
I am pleased that DeVries has focused upon the importance of high school recruiting. In fact, looking ahead, his top ranked recruit, Chase Branham a 6'5" guard is in the 2027 class. At this time my primary concern has been the inability to attract big physical players to IU. He's going to need those types to be successful.
Absolutely, beating out Izzo and Sampson for recruits is going to be a challenge that's hard to win but again, look at the roster for 2025/26. It did not have one high impact big or quality inside player. DeVries and his band of recruiters are going to need to turn this around or the team will be mired in the lower half of the Big 10.was it an inability or could it have been he was battling Sampson and Izzo? The high school kids DeVries signed are as you wrote, all top ranked recruits. They may be able to identify the top bigs but will they be able to get them? That is a whole different question. He will almost certainly have to outspend the likes of Izzo and Sampson to get them so it really comes down to how much money he will have.
