I haven't figured out how Bailey scored before, regardless of the level. All dunks or something? I thought I remember layups off his ball handling, from his highlights. But how could that be, he drops the ball half the time he tries to dunk. His layups usually miss. Stretch forward? Implies to me a serviceable shot. I can't recall him ever taking a standard 15-16 foot jumper? He works to try to help. But he's overmatched. Too bad, seems like a decent kid.
Enright, I don't get it. Probably would dominate the Y, showing how much tougher it is at this level, but never have seen a guard so able to get open, who never developed any sort of scoring.
Well, it's not just them... Several other of the guys Coach selected are one dimensional as well.
The team overall played tough against MSU. No complaints on the effort, for the most part.
,
@arioznahoosier4554 agreed. Or just have the flexibility to close on higher level guys. Different way of saying the same thing, or the same results...it'll need to be a 15 ish million dollar plus roster, in the end.
The real problem now is if you get offered a million to come here or have the same offer from about any other big ten school you go with them. We have no advantages to come here. We suck and fire our coach every 4 years. Why on earth would someone want to come play at IU unless they are getting way more money. It’s not to get booed by our fans I promise. Bailey was getting booed last night and loud.
Oh man, don't boo our own guys! (Woodson I was somewhat OK with, but only in year four, and after the true fans comment.)
@openwheel I used to feel that way but they make a lot of money now. Better be able to take some criticism if they aren't performing. They want to be paid, and that just comes with it.
@cavanagh I think both could be regular 10 ish minute guys for really any good team in the country. Enright we kind of know what he'd look like. He'd be an energy guy off the bench, a guy to go use his fouls and disrupt someone that's on a heater, start and facilitate movement for an offense... that type of guy. Bailey though, on a good team, with good, higher level bigs... we just don't know what he'd look like playing a stretch 4, or stretch wing. He handles the ball very well, for his size, and I'd say he's a plus level perimeter defender, for his size. He's obviously incredibly weak inside, against B10 level bigs. Probably the most weak guy at the rim I've ever seen, from a main rotation guy, in an IU uniform. So I'm not saying he'd be an All B10, or even starter level wing, for anyone. I just think the thought of him playing alongside a good big, is intriguing. Because of his skillset, quickness, and bounciness for someone that's 6-10. Its VERY strange, to me, that CDD hasn't tried it. Just like its very strange that Sisley isn't getting any more run any more. He must be god awful in practices or something.
** and that MSU backup is playing behind the best PG in the conference, in my opinion. And a guy that plays TONS of minutes. So no, Enright would not play a ton for MSU. But he'd be a regular for them. Izzo would love him, I'm sure.
Good Lord man, give it up. How in the hell can he be a stretch wing when he never shoots the ball from outside? Just take your L, it's long overdue.
@mushroomgod its pretty obvious that's being dictated to him... Both he and Alexis shot the ball, at least a little bit, from the outside before they arrived in Bloomington. Now, neither of them even looks at the rim when they catch it outside 10 feet. I'm sure CDD has his reasons for that.
I'm just throwing out the question, or the idea, that maybe he could be more effective as a wing? And with our up and down nature, and how much we struggle against size and length, at times, its strange that CDD hasn't ever tried playing them together.
***and I've long since acknowledged that Bailey isn't good in his role at IU. And I'm questioning, if not criticizing, our coach for insisting on playing him in that role as much as he does. But since I haven't stooped to the bullshit level of calling him "trash"... not good enough for you jokers? He was an all conference A10 player... he's not "trash". He just hasn't fit in at IU, at all. I'm questioning how we could get some more out of him.

He's averaging 18 pts per every 40 minutes played, which is down about 4 from what it was at Davidson, but is not bad. He's also shooting 10% points higher on 2s than he did at Davidson. His OE # is way up from last year. His assists are down but so are his TOs. So the problem isn't his O, as bad as that looks at times. It's that he's so bad on defense and rebounding that that overwhelms his value as an offensive player.
Bottom line is......this is the best version of Reed Bailey that anyone has seen or ever will see again. Based on his stats alone, he never should have been recruited by IU, let alone paid $1M. That should have been obvious, and its one more reason Durwood DeVries is not the man for the job.
Bailey is a tissue. He can't shoot outside of 6 ft. Give it up. "It's being dictated ". Na .. it's not.. he can't shoot, everyone knows it , he knows it so he doesn't. Your dictated comment might stand up for a game but not an entire season.
he can't rebound because he's weak , he can't finish with any amount of contact whatsoever, his free throw shooting has gotten worse as the year has gone on, he can't guard a big , hence is why Tucker does it. The guy is worthless. And Conor, nice kid love his hustle. ... that's all I got for you kid. He's like that kid that tries so hard to make the middle school team but you just have to cut him because hustle only works with suicides ..
I'll add Dorn to this ... maybe he's misused maybe he's a role player with only short minutes. But that dude can't play d , he can't move well , can't rebound. I mean he's probably real good at HORSE, but so am I ,even at 54.
Bailey did have a couple games where he had quite a few dunks and layups and actually 'powered' (relatively speaking) through some contact on the ball once or twice. It's declined since then, maybe mental, from hearing the groans from the crowd. The rebounding vs State had me tearing my hair out. I didn't recall it being quite that level.
Sisley rebounds more. For that reason alone I prefer Sisley even if he would be dominated by bigger guys. I'd rather have him banging inside, we have a better chance. Oh well, I'll just watch the best version of Reed Bailey for now.

I've called him a wuss, but I've never called him trash. He's a good guy. I think he will be a tremendous church league player in about 5 years.
I'd have to look at his highlights again, but from what I remember, he didn't shoot many middle range jumpers. I do remember that he shot a total of 41 3s. I remember one thing I thought then, which was if he was going to be any good at IU, he'd have to shoot twice that many. That was never going to happen with DeVries, Wilkerson & Dorn around.
What I do remember seeing was that he often drove from the top of the circle all the way to the basket. That doesn't work in the BT. The other was that he had an assortment of pivot moves around the basket. I feel like those shots were his bread & butter. I always said he could be effective offensively against bad teams.
@mushroomgod Don't know what to tell you. He shot 3s at Davidson when he was wide open. He hasn't even looked at the rim at IU, not even a shot fake. Its being dictated to him. Ive never met a single basketball player that if given the green light, or encouraged to shoot the ball, when they've shown a willingness to do it in the past, that won't shoot the ball when open.
Again... CDD has his reasons. I think for most of the year, our offense was better when Reid was in the game. So offensively, Reid not looking at shooting and just operating as a screener and passer, was working just fine.
My continuous question... why not play him that way, with Alexis also in the game with him from time to time. Hell, run a 1-3-1 with Bailey at the top of the zone, or a 2-3 with Bailey on one of the wings. He's charmin levels of soft actually corralling rebounds, but he has been pretty active getting his hands on balls.
They're just questions. He's 6-10, he's athletic, he was a mid major all conference player, we invested 1 million bucks in to him... and its beyond obvious he isn't that level of big man. Why not try him in different ways? Why just accept what has become the recent fate of 10-15 minutes of very, very poor 5 man play?
@openwheel I used to feel that way but they make a lot of money now. Better be able to take some criticism if they aren't performing. They want to be paid, and that just comes with it.
BS, in Bailey's case. The kid has been the sole target of the students booing for at least this calendar year. He's far from great, but he's done nothing to deserve being isolated and 'picked on' while others get a free pass. Maybe he screwed all of those burners' girlfriends or something, but that ish yesterday was ridiculous and I can only imagine how uncomfortable Wednesday night will be when seniors are introduced/recognized. Maybe Pam will have some snipers take out some of he worst offenders.
Is the booing going to make Reed play better? Like, what's the freaking point?
@openwheel he scored almost 19ppg last year for Davidson and had 6rpg and almost 4 apg and .8 blocks; all of which led their team. Everyone dumping on Bailey is misguided: that blame belongs on the coach. He has never been a 5 and should have never been asked to play there. Pair him up with a big who is a rim and paint protector and can take the other teams 5 and allow Bailey to play out on floor and he would be a good player. How good would depend on how good the competition and his roster is, but the "blame" for the miss on Bailey should be directed at the coach and staff for not properly constructing the roster.
As many have noted, DD's talent evaluation is questionable. You can make all the excuses about limited time to recruit or whatever, but he really only brought in one player who truly makes a difference: Wilkerson. (I don't count TD because he's a DNA recruit.) The Portal may not have been the greatest, but talent was still available. As @cavanagh mentioned, the ROI for this group of guys it pretty poor. IU may not have had Michigan money, but they had good bank. If you have the 2nd-most NIL in a conference, you shouldn't finish middle of the pack and miss the NCAAT. That's inexcusable, imo. Hell, there are teams in the B1G who are performing better than IU ... with a fraction of the budget.
If you plan to build a roster around shooting, you'd better damn will bring in shooters. Wilkerson (38% 3FG), Dorn (37%), and Tucker (33%) are the only ones who have shown any semblance of consistency. Not good. In fact, this team is only 2.5 percentage points better from three than last year's squad ... and they were the gang that couldn't shoot straight (sans Goode). Speaking of which, I thought Goode not being granted an extra year was no big deal. Boy was I wrong. He's a better shooter than anyone on this team, and he might have thrived in this system ... offensively anyway.
It's just baffling that DD didn't see the glaring flaws in the roster. Shit, even fans were expressing concerns before the season even started: slow, not overly athletic, small, etc. Moreover, it would have helped if he paid any attention at all to defense.
I honestly don't think more money will make much difference. I just don't. If this ragtag group is the best DD can do, I don't understand why anyone thinks he'll do a 180 and construct a strong roster for next season.
