Regardless of whether may would have come here or not the Mullins fiasco is inexcusable and should have been a fire able offense on the spot. The fact they had to force Woodson to go watch him in playoff game finally boggles the mind. It was likely too late at that point it was already the end of the season. Not only that Woodson brought his wife with it must have been date night and they needed to match a quick Mullins appearance before dinner and drinks. The below is such a lie he did not heavily recruit him at all.

Indiana basketball coach Mike Woodson and his staff, including assistants Brian Walsh and Jordan Hulls, heavily recruited 2025 shooting guard Braylon Mullins, watching him perform in person multiple times in early 2024. Woodson visited the elite in-state shooter at Greenfield-Central High School, including after a 51-point game.

Who here is defending Woodson? Why is this still a topic?  Woodson wanted to pay for recruits, not recruit them. He failed at putting together a team that could perform at the levels expected of IU and he was fired.  There's no reason to believe Mullins would have come here if he had been heavily recruited by us.  There's no reason to believe Woodson would have used him in a fashion that would have made us successful if he had recruited him and gotten him and kept his job. There's no reason to believe that if Woodson had secured a commitment, yet still been fired, that Mullins would have maintained his commitment.

Why is this still a topic? -  I thought this board was called the airing of grievances are we not allowed to talk about woodson anymore? What are we allowed to air grievances on if you tell me what and what is not allowed I will stay on the approved only topics.

this thread is for exactly what you're posting about ... they've relegated us to one thread only and now they want to censor that ... sounds about right.  Don't like an opposing view censor it.

The complete and utter incompetence of Quinn and IU is on full display tonight at 8pm for the whole country to see but we are just supposed to ignore it and move on I guess. Pretend like it never happened. Just watch Mullins make a last second three to win it all.

the reason it's still a topic and many still wallow in it is because it still hasn't been addressed with a solution or complete recognition of the idiocy of the last 26 years.  Win and it goes away...  don't see that happening next year either

I do not wallow it myself especially now that we are a football school and I know the chances of IU bbal ever being great again are very slim. To me its more of the baffling nature of unforced error after unforced error that put the bbal program in the gutter.  Hiring may was basically a no brainer and something a serious program would have done or at least tried to do. But as an unserious program I guess we ae just supposed to ignore the total incompetence and just rah rah rah the new guy even though he missed the tourney. There  is a reason Pat Forde and guys like him are writing the articles today it baffles them too how IU screwed this up as bad as they did. And he guy who helped screw it up will be cheered and clapped for at half. Now how ironic is that.

Surprised that UNC didn't learn from our colossal mistake.

At least Malone is younger than Woodson and won at a much higher level in the NBA. And if he bombs there won’t be a good old boy network to protect him.

Malone isn’t part of it.

yes. It's just shut up and cheer you asshole. Shut up and cheer.

the whole basketball world sees it except the sunshine pumpers here and in IU land.  The program is a joke and it will take either a shit ton of money or someone real special to come along and change its course.  But I guess there's only one Cig I'm told so don't dare compare to him ... ok. Sure. Then I guess mediocrity it is

At they say are fans are too toxic lol. If they were that toxic they would have been trying to run woodson out of town on day one and the same with dolson for hiring him . Instead I saw incredible patience given we hired a guy who had no business being a college coach. It was not until year 4 before the sunshine pumpers started to turn on woodson even a little bit.

If reports are correct and UNC hires Malone, I applaud their outside-the-box thinking. But ... an NBA guy is a huge gamble (as we know). First, Malone hasn't coached in college since 2001 ... and only reached the assistant level. Second, his NBA record is just okay (.562). Sure, he did win a championship in Denver, but it's hard not to be competitive with the world's best player.

Who knows what goes on behind closed doors, but this seems like a Plan Q move to me. That said, if UNC's top candidates declined or weren't available, it might not be the worst idea. However it unfolds, it will be damn interesting.

no there isn't but that works both ways.  Maybe he would have maybe he wouldn't have.  But isn't that what a forum is about. Especially the thread that's titled "Airing of IUBB grievances".  Lots of conjecture in sports talk ... ESPN built an empire on it

There’s a myth that either May or Mullins wanted to be at IU, and that we somehow forfeited an advantage or big lead in getting either of them to come to Bloomington. You could throw Stevens into that mix as well, since the delusion that he was headed back to Indiana reached fever pitch after Archie got run. We’ve been falling down the staircase since BK was fired (and even before that), and it would’ve been a miracle if all of the dysfunction didn’t produce the results we’ve had.

None of this is a shot at DeVries, who should get more than a year to demonstrate whether he was the right choice.

The University of North Carolina intends to hire longtime NBA coach Michael Malone as its next basketball coach.

He certainly won at a higher  level than woodson but name one NBA coach who ever came from the NBA to college and had success? And Pitino and Calipari do not count they were college first. I mean maybe with the portal it may change but NBA guys most always flame out in college.

@dbmhoosier This illustrates McCollum was never coming to IU ... no matter what. I wouldn't be surprised if he retires a Hawkeye.

It proves the big name programs consider him an up and comer with a bright future. I did not see DD on the interview list.

This will be a flop hire. There's no reason whatsoever to think he'll have any success at this level.  He'll coast on the UNC resources for a few years and give off some false positives until it slowly sinks in that he's nowhere near the level that fanbase is accostumed to.

Personally, I love the hire. I hope they can experience some of what IU fans have had to deal with for 30 years.

@surjay You're probably right that it will be a failed experiment, but at least Malone has had some success in the NBA ... and has actually coached at the college level (albeit long ago). Therefore, I think he's a notch or two above guys like Howard and Woody (which isn't saying much, but still).

Apparently, all the "big guns" turned down UNC, but I wonder if they contacted a guy like Byington. Not saying he would have been the answer, but he seems like a better candidate.

If it somehow works, the powers-that-be at Carolina will look like geniuses. If it doesn't, they'll look like fools. It really is a feast or famine hire.
