@arioznahoosier4554 yep! Could have hired 10 or more guys better than Woodson!

the problem was all we ever heard about was how you had to hire an iu guy and finally quinn saw his chance.

And the IU guy nonsense was always code for Alford.  No one in a million years thought they'd be dumb enough to hire Woodson.

A fairly large and very influential group of former players wanted Woodson after Buckner and a few others pushed out Crean. Glass dug his grave when he blew off MW by not even returning his calls or those of players.

@dbmhoosier And it wasn't "everybody" plenty of people rejected the idea that an "IU guy" or Alford specifically was the answer.

Joe Hillman screamed and yelled about hiring an IU guy for years but my guess is I think he thought it would be alford not a horrible coach who had never coached college. I cannot even imagine how awful woodson would have been in NIL did not exist.

Woodson was to coaching what Robert Olson is to message board posting

@dbmhoosier Bingo! Alford -Maaaaaybe Whitman, were the only 2 IU guys remotely capable of coaching IU, Alford may have worked, much like painter, IZF he would have been hired shortly after RMK. No other IU guys are/were qualified for this job.

Alford’s fate was sealed years ago, and Wittman didn’t want it.

Aside from Frank and now May, what "IU guy" besides Alford (meh) could even be considered a viable IUBB coaching candidate? I can't think of a single one.

I don't disagree. The time to hire Alford was in 2001.

Nothing in Alford's coaching history suggests he is an elite coach or was ever the guy IU "needed." And he would have been even harder to fire than Woodson.

You obviously weren’t aware of what went on, which isn’t surprising, but that’s what happened.

I thought this was interesting but probably not thread-worthy in and of itself so I thought I'd stick it here:

I read an article about how Illinois fans are buying up FF tickets ala IU football fans this past year in the bowl games......so I googled to see opinions on the relative fans bases in the sport.....an Andy Katz piece from August '24 listed it this way:

1.  UK

2.  U Conn

3.  Kansas

4.  Duke

5.  Purdue

6.  Illinois

7.  N. Carolina

8.  Indiana

9.  Arkansas

10. Iowa State

What are your thoughts?  I'm kinda like FU Andy, and I'm thinking he has an anti-IU bias.  When we had the Indy tourney involving IU, Purdue, ND & Butler, the IU fans dominated every year.  I think IU fans are dormant, but I do think our permanent fan base has shrunk somewhat, but all things being equal on the court (which I hope will happen soon), I think we're too low here, Purdue, U Conn, Arkansas are too high, and I'd make room for Louisville in my top 10.

UNC & Duke are interesting in that I think you include national/subway following the #s are too low, but if you count seriously passionate fans Duke is too high.  I have no problem with Illinois' placement.  For having never won a NC, they do have passionate fans.  I remember years ago I was traveling through central Illinois on a football Saturday, and I was shocked by how many radio stations covered the game.  Also, in law school I knew several Illinois grads and they had a very high opinion of Illinois as a school (and of themselves).  Purdue is interesting in that Purdue grads are generally pretty passionate about their sports but they have a smallish non-alum fan base statewide & nationally.

I do hope Michigan wins the title just to rub Dolson’s, Woodson’s, and Buckner’s noses in shit.

I really thought Arizona would make a closer game of it. Certainly looks like the game is all Michigan's so far.

They are smoking arizona. I think all may and Woodson care about is that he got that 4th year cause archie got 4. Likely the biggest blunder in iu history and there have been many.
