and technically speaking if they are treating them as subcontractors.. the law states the contract labor has to be within the realm of reality for the expense or amount paid for it. Now how do they evaluate that ? That's up to the IRS. So this could get thrown over to them and they could make a judgment call either way... and honestly I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig on that investigation.

In five years there will be no need for any of these guys to even go to the nba until their four years are up. The way the salaries are going up they will soon be making more than NBA guys. I think TJD got 500k four years ago a guy like him now would get 5 million. Next year it will probably be 6 million.

It has mostly already ruined it for me I still watch but nothing like I used and now I just laugh when they say student athlete. I used to love hs recruiting and followed all the rankings, visits, etc. The three guys IU got last year first I heard of it was when they made the pledge. I lost all interest in hs recruiting since the portal portal started. Still not sure I could even tell you the name of the other guy coming back with Sisley next year I just know he is a skinny guy from Europe.
@arioznahoosier4554 I'm not sure how sustainable it is though. Donors will eventually tire of the calls and the bullshit. It's one thing to get a call to kick in for a capital improvement and quite another to be pestered year after year to subsidize kids. What happened to the two I paid for last year? One didn't pan out the other is transferring. Yeah I think I'll pass this year.
@bar-down I keep wondering why donors continue funding these NIL deals. What's in it for them? Other than the pride of seeing their favorite team win, is there something in it for the donors? Some form of return? Is there a tax deduction like other "charitable" contributions? It's not really a charitable donation.
If not, I don't care how much money you have, at some point you stop throwing your money away. There will be a limit. Unless there is some sort of consideration coming from the players, like actually representing a product/service or making appearances. I thought that was the original intent of the NIL, but now, as someone else posted in another thread (might have been this thread), it's just basically a salary.
@jhoban19 Football heading to the Rose Bowl, National Championship game, super, super fun. Presumably feel like you contributed in making that happen and truly were part of it. Some multi year 500 in league basketball team with a revolving door of players - not so much. More fun to just get a boat.
Rev Share and NIL are 2 different buckets of money. Rev share comes from the school, while NIL does not.

Each year, schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap.
The cap for the 2025-26 academic year is $20.5 million per school. With a few potential exceptions, the cap will then increase 4% the following two years and will be re-evaluated every three years over the duration of the 10-year settlement period.
