Lost Tristan to the portal. Wonder if we try to replace him for this season.
@hurryinghoosiers he’s been off the roster since June. You can’t fill the roster spot this year
Thank you for reading Hoosier Huddle
so he left just to use up his redshirt this year.
Bummer to lose someone when it is too late to do anything to replace them
We're plenty deep in his position.
Trained and redshirted and then bailed. If he had been a 4 or 5 star recruit I'd be suspecting Lane Kiffin. Still might be, lol.
As it is, maybe it's mutual, maybe expectations by Cig...
@thehoosierhuddle I don't understand this. Is it an ncaa rule? If it is, when is the last time you can replace someone? I'm envisioning some rogue coach somewhere doing something really stupid (Michigan comes to mind) and 20-25 players want to transfer. That school is actually forced to play without 20-25% of their roster for the whole season?
@bucketgetter It's July 30th. The portal is closed...how are you adding someone?

I thought you just had to enter the portal during the window but that you could commit to a new school at any time??
I think bucketgetter is more just saying it's a dumb rule if teams aren't allowed to add people now to replace people that might leave after the window is closed. Even if those people that leave can't officially enter a transfer portal yet.
Coaches would find a way to abuse it, if you could add guys in the fall. Even if it took review and a waiver.
They'd strongly encourage guys to move on if they needed better quality at a position. Then would cry poverty and say "this player left the team, I need someone!' and get a waiver and buy someone else.
Barry Switzer's joking comment now is reality. Asked what he'd do for Dallas at some position if they had an injury and he quipped 'same thing as at Oklahoma, buy the best player available.' Or something like that.
Unless I'm missing something on page 176 of the NCAA "rulebook", a walkon with a $400k NIL deal can be added at anytime if you are under the 105 roster limit as long as that player isn't under contract or scholarship at another school.
And even if they were under contract with another school, they would just be obligated to pay the contracts buyout.
There was just a story today that a Texas Olineman got his injunction to get a fifth additional season after going through an NFL mini camp.
Guys dropping out of NFL camps and getting injunctions for fifth seasons could be a major CFB headline here in Aug and Sept.

Every year, aren't there many players that had entered the portal but never landed on another team?
I would think there would be no harm in letting teams take players at any time (at least before school starts) who had already put their name in the portal during the portal window and aren't currently on another team.
.. the NCAA "rulebook" ...Your quotes around rulebook got an actual LOL from me. 😀
Wild, never heard the rule you described. Interesting.
@thehoosierhuddle Like others replied, there are still hundreds (thousands?) of players in the portal. Even though no one can enter, surely they can exit.
Edit: There are 3,669 players in the portal as of 7/30. They can sign with any team that has an opening. No players can legally enter the portal at this point, but if they legally entered months ago, they are good to go.
Why was Cig bitching about no spring portal then?At least I thought he did, about not being able to add guys this spring.
That could only hurt, not help, for the most part. But yeah, I thought it was only about players entering. But got confused...
Anyway, Abram will have to sit out end enter the portal later I guess. Hopeful the huddle will pass on what they hear.
I don’t see why you would want to fill the spot just to fill it. It only makes sense to fill it if you can get someone who has a chance to contribute. I doubt you have that rare combination of talent and mindset that Cig looks for when the portal is closed and the guys not with their programs right now are either not good enough or likely have some kind of baggage we may not want. Plus, as Sammy said we are pretty deep at that position. So, I don’t think we need to waste a roster spot just to fill it.
I have no idea if Cigs comments were related to Abrams or not, but when he started describing how he addresses “bad apples” it made me wonder if that’s what happened here. Again, no inside information on my part here. So, it very well could be completely unrelated, but regardless if Cig isn’t concerned I’m certainly not.
