If I had to call 1 of 2 shots, it would be CJ Bailey or Arch.

Cig doesn't strike me as someone that would want the circus entertainment that would come with Arch coming here.

Plus, I don't think he's really that good.

Apparently Hoosier clarian has trouble with differing opinions.

I highly doubt we would take arch at the price he would want.  He is a good QB but overrated due to his name

If he's transferring form UT rather than going to the draft or staying at UT, then he's probably looking to improve his ability to get drafted higher and become a better QB.  I'm not saying we'd get him for free, but we could have some leverage in that conversation and he's not short of money already.  Take a couple million discount now that you earn back with an improved draft status.  It probably won't happen, but I would be 0% shocked if it did.

I would agree with this view....I wonder whether Cig has any connections to the Manning family....there's great upside here but also baggage.

I wonder if the 24 team setup will change Cig and the staff's approach, at all?  Maybe they'll feel a little more comfortable rolling with a younger kid next year, with a little more cushion to make the CFP?  I personally would not pay the astronomical amount of money that Archie will likely command.  But I'm sure there will be other, more affordable and more proven guys available.  In the end I don't really care, I've enjoyed Rourke, Mendoza, and now Hoover... but it would be nice to play a frosh or soph, at some point, and follow him for multiple years.

I liked your thoughts about possibly going with a younger QB with the 24 team playoff....but after doing a little looking its very unlikely for next year.

We have Cherry, Jacob Bell and Jameson Purcell for next year.  Just based on observations, I don't think Cherry's going to be the guy.  The other 3 guys we need to look at are Bell, Purcell, and Lukas Prock in '28.

Of those 3 Bell was the least recruited, then Purcell, then Prock.  Prock is now rated as high as #4 QB nationally, top 50 overall player.  By contrast, Purcell is considered a top 33-35 QB in his class. Bell  a top 60-65 guy.

All 3 guys are the same body type---6-2 to 6-3 with a little muscle.  All are mobile, but don't run very often.  Statistically, Bell & Purcell are 63-65% guys, Prock is 73-74%, the difference continued for their HS careers........so, if Cig has thoughts of turning the program over to any young QB, Prock in '28 would seem to be the obvious choice.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm a CG guy thru and thru, so I am clearly biased, but I wouldn't discount Cherry so easily. Former 4-Star state champion. And don't forget, there's a very good reason Cig offered him a student/coach position last year. They wanted to keep him in the fold and didn't want to burn a scholarship year. Time will tell, but I'm hoping his patience gets rewarded.

The thing I don't understand is if Coach Cigs has any faith in either of his backup QBs, then why not let one of them play when Hoover is nursing an injury severe enough that we stuck with simply running the ball for an entire half?  Even against a team with an awful offense, it almost backfired.

I can understand the reluctance to throw the backup QB into the fire in the Big House, but I'm hoping we see Wilson this week.  Minnesota has some nice home wins this season (Michigan and this past Saturday versus Iowa) and they have a solid D, but our elite D should be able to control this game.  We're a heavy favorite for a reason, and I'm thinking we're good with a game-manager at QB this Saturday.  Wilson is in his 7th season of college football.  He's appeared in about 30 games and has 14 starts.  He should be up to the task.

Assuming Hoover's injury is something that can respond relatively quickly to conservative treatment, it seems prudent to keep him out of this game, then benefit from the bye week, and be good to go for the final regular season stretch and post-season.

I think you answer your own question.  He has said you first must not lose the game before you can win it.  He doesn't have much faith in GW or Cherry.  Now.....there may be more to that decision that at first appears in that a change may also affect the morale of the players on the field.  If THEY had any faith in a change you would think Cig might be more likely to make it.

Per Cig today, Hoover is starting.

that's disconcerting if our depth at QB is 1 when both of the backups have been around a while.  I don't totally buy that as the answer though because you would think Cigs would have tried to replace 1 or both during the off-season.   I think the answer is more that Cigs likes to live and die by whoever he chooses as QB1 unless they are completely unable to perform.

Do you realize Cherry was injured last year and wasn't even really on the team?  Never practiced.  Was a student coach, just to save a roster spot or some such thing.  And he was thrilled to get Wilson back for his maturity and experience, but this is the transfer portal era.  Almost no one has a reliable backup QB that is a sure thing.  Hell, Raiola seems to suck worse now than when he was at Nebraska and he was probably the top QB2 in the country to start the year.

Well aware that cherry was injured.  Obviously liked him well enough to save his eligibility by making him a student manager.

Having unproven depth doesn't necessarily equal not having depth.  It is the unknown

I think you answer your own question.  He has said you first must not lose the game before you can win it.  He doesn't have much faith in GW or Cherry.  Now.....there may be more to that decision that at first appears in that a change may also affect the morale of the players on the field.  If THEY had any faith in a change you would think Cig might be more likely to make it.

that's disconcerting if our depth at QB is 1 when both of the backups have been around a while.

I've been wondering, so I don't know for sure, but I suspect the new eligibility rules mean that Cherry's eligibility won't end up being saved by what they did last year.  I'd expect a lawsuit out of it, probably, but by the letter of the law, he's only got two years after this one.  It was a smart idea under the old rules, but unlikely to help him under the new ones.

@gros-louis I thought current players got to go with the old rules if it benefitted them. That is why Wilson is in his 7th year, and Gowers can play at 30 yrs old.
