Rumors abound that Raiola is hitting the portal
Buzz that Florida's D.J. Lagway will hit the portal.
Top HS QB nationally ....5*+
The fake barstool guys are saying IU is pushing hard for mestmaker. I said there is zero evidence of that. 😉
Some guy saying IU offer is north of 3 million and he (no surprise) wrote a newsmax article. lol. I’m calling BS. Suspicious clickbait.
Yeah, Lagway made it official this morning that he plans to enter the portal. Although i understand the excitement of discussing, a lot of these names that are coming up are hard to see as a fit when Alberto is expected to be the starter. It’s difficult for me to see a guy who has started at a P4 program multiple years to come here to compete without a spring portal option to transfer if he doesn’t win the job. I don’t think it’s any secret at this point that Alberto is expected to be our starter next year. I’d be pleasantly surprised if it was Mestemaker.
Sammy, good call out on Mestemaker’s athleticism though. I was so enamored with his efficiency rating and stats I never paid attention to his immobility, but one thing to note is I don’t think that would stop Cig and he has coached up those types to big seasons before. However, I do agree that if we have the pick of the litter we should get someone who can at least be sneaky athletic like Fernando. With Alberto maybe having to rely on his legs more early in the season as the passing game works to gel I worry he will be more susceptible to injury. So, I think we do need a seasoned backup. So, in that regard I can get on board with a Colton Joseph even though he wouldn’t be my ideal choice. It feels like he may be the best realistic option we could find to serve as a backup and still play at a high level if Alberto goes down. The good thing is that the more QBs like Lagway who enter the portal will saturate the market for QBs and make it easier to get a guy like Joseph to come to IU in an expected backup role.
CBS sports is now trying to push the Sorsby to Indiana rumor. Looks to be all speculation though.

You might want to divorce yourself from the idea that Alberto is going to be the starter next year.
@qparker Raiola and DJ Lagway are huge risks. IU will get a portal quarterback, but not every portal guy is an IU target. Agents are leaking stuff to help their clients. IU will take a long look at Alberto and then see what kind of portal QB they are going to get.
With that being said paying north of $3million for a QB with an injury history like theirs. Raiola broke his Fibula and is still recovering. Lagway has been in and out of the lineup with injury.
When we hear something from the school's side, which we probably won't until after the Rose Bowl since they won't want to admit to tampering (even though everyone is "tampering").
The debate isn't whether or not IU will get a portal QB, it's what caliber of guy. Someone to compete with Alberto or some QB depth. The staff loves Alberto and it would be great for the program if he were the starter and IU didn't have to drop $4 million or whatever on a QB.

@thehoosierhuddle Sammy, I made that comment about tampering yesterday in response to the Mestemaker rumor, but when I went back and read the contact rules it said an athlete can reach out to a school at any time. Perhaps that’s how Sorsby got the Cincinnati offer while still playing at IU? The school just cannot contact an athlete until he is in the portal and only if the athlete specifies he is open to being contacted. So, I guess these contacts could be happening if the athlete is initiating it; right? Would it still be tampering if an athlete was offered after initiating contact with a school?

I do wonder with the success Cig has had with QB's going back to his JMU days and now with the Heisman winner if he has a little equity and can get a nice qb at a bit of a discount.
He's going to be 2 for 2 now with getting transfer qbs in the nfl. That a huge thing for kids now.
@olympian97 To me, it's the principle of the thing with Sorsby. Could he field calls from programs? Sure, but you were the starting quarterback on a team that was fighting for their lives and his head was about making the next buck.
As far as this portal period (Jan 2-16) I am not 100% sure on the rules. It is technically a "Dead Period"
A dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus.---per NCAA.com
It may seem like they can talk, but players are not in the portal officially until January 2nd so technically they cannot talk to them.

@gros-louis Why?
I just don't think it's a lock that it's going to play out that way. It might. It might not.
@gros-louis Fair. It’s not a LOCK, but it’s how they are approaching it. Taking a long look at Alberto and then judging what caliber of QB they’ll need to get.

@olympian97 I believe you are correct. My GF's daughter is in the portal for vball and prior to the portal date, she could make contact with coaches, but they couldn't initiate contact with her.
