A question for the community...pretend you were an all-powerful tsar and could pluck any quarterback that is expected to play college football next season and place him on IU's roster (for example, Fernando is not expected to play CFB next season, can't pick him...Arch Manning is, you could pick him), the cost of said player does not factor into the equation at all, who would you pick to lead IU's offense in 2026?
I bring this up because I continue to read "IU should get a portal QB" followed by some version of "every QB out there would consider IU, look what the staff did with Fernando". So, I'm curious about who the "dream candidate" would be for anyone that wants to respond.
Alberto Mendoza.
@tjinman1987 Drew Mestemaker. Has the measurables that fits Cigs offense and still has 3 years of eligibility which means we could have him at least 2. He would be perfect.
@lncolnpk IU is not going after Sam Leavitt...He'd be a disaster of a fit in this culture. Not to mention he had season ending surgery and his availability for spring practice is unknown. Others may ignore those facts for some X clout, but for the price he is going to demand, IU won't get within a mile (figuratively) of him.
He's also repped by his brother, so coaches are exactly dealing with a pro there.
Sorsby can return and back up Alberto. I wouldnt be bent about it. Need a very good #2 .

I was impressed by Alberto when he played..seemed twitchier, sneaky quick and big enough to run 6-8 times per game.
Does anyone know about his passing?
He has looked good in mop up time. He threw a very nice back shoulder to Becker for a TD in one game. Fernando thinks a lot of him.😎Sorsby can return and back up Alberto. I wouldnt be bent about it. Need a very good #2 .

From what I’ve seen I think his skillset is fine, but he is not quite as good as Fernando at seeing the field. That pick he threw into the end zone is definitely the type of play he has to eliminate. If I recall correctly he threw into double coverage in the middle of the end zone. I’m not going to fault him on the results of one play though. By most accounts he is performing very well. I’m not worried about QB. That is a position IU is best at evaluating and developing. Whoever is the QB next year I’m confident will be good whether it’s Alberto or someone else. There are a lot more positions that will need backfilled. Especially on defense and OL.Sorsby can return and back up Alberto. I wouldnt be bent about it. Need a very good #2 .

Sorsby is not a target. For his asking price ~$4 million, it’s already a no. The fact he was fielding offers to get out of Bloomington as quickly as possible while starting winnable games for IU, makes it a louder no.

You can't compare a player based on minimal sample size and has never started, to a heisman trophy winner. With playing time and first team reps, I think Alberto could eventually be as good if not even better than Fernando.
did you miss reading the part where I said I wouldn’t fault him for one play? To call out an obvious mistake is not to suggest he is going to be bad. It was only to show what he needed to improve as all we have to go by is a small sample size. I actually was making the exact same point. I have faith Alberto will do well. He will make mistakes. Fernando made mistakes. There were many here who lost all faith in Fernando after the Old Dominion game, but I didn’t. I understand that it’s a process. Alberto will be fine so as long as he stays committed to the process. From what I’ve seen I think his skillset is fine, but he is not quite as good as Fernando at seeing the field. I didnt say you did. You did, however, use a small sample size to explain why he isnt "quite as good as Fernando", hence my response to that.
No matter the feelings or belief in Alberto, IU will need to get a portal QB, maybe 2. It won't be Sam Leavitt (sorry JC) and I would tell Sorsby to kick rocks., but they will get a portal QB. They need the depth there.
Alberto needs playing time. He will either get it here where he will have his growing pains or he will get it somewhere else. I’m hoping the staff sees enough in him to get it here, but IU definitely needs a backup or two.
Does anyone know anything about Cherry? What was his exact injury? Why did he decide to become a student assistant? How's his rehab going? Seems like total silence regarding him.
