What’s going to stop a player from leaving school in the spring and enrolling in a new school in the fall?
Ryan Day and Cig both publicly opposed it. So that seems both sides of your argument.I kind of looked at it from a different approach. Teams like IU that still need a lot of portal kids are going to have a tougher time building a great team. The blue bloods that already have good recruiting built up do not want the IUs and Vanderbilts building competitive teams through the portal.That ridiculous portal window had to voted in by people connected to weaker programs. Trying to throw up roadblocks to transfers to more enticing programs. I.e, those likely to play in the post season.
I think there is a lot more have nots, than haves. So I think it passed due to pressure by the have nots. Day and Cig are both - haves. The reason Day gave was that it was a big disadvantage for those in the playoffs. Cig pretty much the same.
@kelly_32 I don’t think that is a problem. The reason for the portal is that is the time when it is allowed for a school to contact and speak with a player from another team.
@unclemark He's not going to get "recruited over" he will simply have to win the position in practice. We need another experienced QB for next year and he, along with Alberto and (hopefully) Cherry will fight for QB1. If Alberto isn't willing to earn the starting spot in practice, who needs him?

I don't think we disagree. Alberto shouldn't expect it to be handed to him. Then again, if he does get beat out, he's gone.
OTOH, what top shelf one year transfer will come here without at least some kind of assurances? It's a weird time.

2 year starter at Youngstown State, played well against MSU this year as one of their cupcake games.
This season he threw for 2900 yards, 69% completion, 23 TD / 3 INT and ran for 1400 yards and 24 TDs
Ton of production, should be pretty cheap. Would be a senior next season

I'd be shocked if he's not. Any transfer will get a shot, but they would be battling Cherry.
Of course, I don't know much and could be totally wrong.
Cherry hasn't played any real important football in years.
He may get cleared, but I wouldn't rely on him.
I have a feeling we'll get someone that can compete for the starting job.

Alberto said if Fernando comes back for his senior year, he would go into the portal, probably b/c Fernando would be a lock for starter and everyone else would be competing for QB2.
A top-shelf transfer can be induced to come here for the pay-day and the chance to be QB1. Michalski probably thought he would be the starting RT but he got beaten out. Cig isn't going to offer a transfer QB anything but a chance. "Everything is earned not given".
There is zero chance Fernando comes back next year but I still Alberto will transfer.

Fernando would be crazy to come back when he is being projected as a top 5 pick and has a chance at #1. His stock may never be higher than it is now. As much as I would selfishly love to see him come back he has to cash in on his status.

Yeah, obviously we don’t know what he is going to do, but my point was that if he does go in the portal there is a higher probability he follows his coach than ends up here. However, he is still one of my favorite targets if he did come available and we could somehow swing it. I’m more than content with Alberto and am not advocating to replace him. So, I’m not quite sure what part of the statement you’re disagreeing with, but I think it’s fair to say if there’s someone who could potentially portal who you would want. You could say the exact same thing to the fans who have said they want Marsh or Sellers. None of those guys are in the portal, but some fans have found them intriguing to discuss as potential options to fill gaps.

Sorry about that... the part about wanting few qbs besides Alberto. Every year, starting qbs from all over the nation enter the portal. With Cigs preference of production over potential, there might be someone that comes along that Cig wants for the starting job.
