Its been a long, arduous and painful ride but, we've arrived gents. I've sincerely appreciated every speculation, nonsensical bickering match, piss poor predictions, and lack of belief that then became full on belief in this team....regardless, it's all came from the same infatuation for this program. I've thoroughly enjoyed this journey alongside all of you. ...well most of you. ,;) But really....Cheers to those before us and let's all make the most of this moment because we never know what the future holds.
As for the convicts in South Florida, we may not all be catholic in Indiana but we certainly know how to lay the law. Let's go get us that title!!!!!
It is not hurtful to me personally, but it is hurtful to others who don't deserve it. We had players' parents subjected to chants from Ole Miss fans about how their sons are convicts and thugs who belong in prison instead of on the field just last week. That kind of behavior is sadly a common experience for our team and has been for years. The fan bases from more academically inclined institutions like IU are much classier in my experience and we don't see the same BS in those games.Gotta admit, it is stupid to be calling some other team convicts. And the they did it first on their boards is - I know you are, but what am I? - level.
That said, going on opposing message boards to cry about it (Hurtful? Message board throw away posts? Hurtful? ) is dumb too. Hopefully there will be some good interactions and information. I dont mind hearing the state of their fans.
And this was only an aside in my original post, not why I came here to post. I've already had good interactions with you all here and appreciate it.
There are a few bad apples in every fan base. The whole “convicts” thing arose not from players who violated the law but rather from people who didn’t like brash, trash talking black kids. Sadly, you see that some people’s racial attitudes remain stuck in the nearest trailer park. Hopefully, the vast majority of fans are well past that nonsense.
It came from a couple of college kids trying to make some cash selling t-shirts. It was catchy and stuck.
Absolutely, but it was also dripping with bigotry, something even the powers that be at Notre Dame understood quite clearly. I don’t think the kids that made the shirts intended for that to be the result, but it certainly created a pigment-focused Good versus Evil narrative that everyone with a functioning brain understood quite clearly.
I guess that depends on how you view the world.
If you see race first, I’m sure you’ll find it offensive. I tend to see the world through a sense of humor.
Diehard lifelong cane fan here. Not coming to troll, I cant stand people who do that. I really appreciate learning about opponents by hearing what their die hard fans have to say as you all probably know more about your team than anyone im going to find on Youtube or ESPN. Beyond impressed with what you all have managed to do and I think we have to play our A+ game like ND / USF / Ohio State games to win and if we play our Fiesta Bowl game we will get boat raced.
As a total aside, and please take this in the friendly, non judgmental spirit with which this is offered, it is actually hurtful to us when people bring out the convicts and thugs tropes. Our guys are high character hard workers on the fields and in the classrooms and they care deeply about their community.
Good luck (but not too much luck!) next week and please feel free to pepper me with any questions on the stadium/traveling in Miami for any of you who are coming down.
I agree that the convicts/thugs labels are false, stupid and offensive.
Your team has a reputation for playing dirty, and the Ole Miss game didn't help your rep in that regard. Miami is, in fact, one of the most heavily penalized teams in the country. Why is that? A lack of discipline?

Well to be frank the reputation that we play dirty is a similar level of silliness as the junk going around twitter and forums recently that you guys are cheating. Dirty is the oregon player who tried to go for one of your dudes eyes or face under the pile in the peach bowl. What we are is violent and physical within the boundaries of the spirit of the sport at every position. It is why we are here.
We are (quite frustratingly) prone to undisciplined play at times and it was almost why we aren't here. We boat race Louisville and SMU but for that crap (I think 23 or 24 penalties or some insane number in those two Ls).
The stats do the speaking on the difference. The metric you want to look at to identify undisciplined teams is penalties per game and penalty yards per game. We are bottom third nationally in both and those stats don't lie. The metric you want to look at to identify dirty teams is average penalty yards per penalty, and we are top 15 nationally there. That is the opposite of dirty. (Oregon, by contrast is near the worst in the nation there)
@canecominginpeace - Clearly not within the boundaries of the sport, hence the penalties.
If you are arguing that false starts are not within the boundaries of the sport then i suppose we are dirty as it gets?@canecominginpeace - Clearly not within the boundaries of the sport, hence the penalties.

And a PI that wasnt called.
Oh for sure that was a PI lol. DBs not doing their job if they're not doing some PI in a hail mary scenario. Our DC ain't no fool; he's learned from some of the best coaches in the gameIf you are arguing that false starts are not within the boundaries of the sport then i suppose we are dirty as it gets?@canecominginpeace - Clearly not within the boundaries of the sport, hence the penalties.

@canecominginpeace I don’t personally engage in it, but most fan bases do. Penn State probably gets it the worst from most opposing fan bases due to the Sandusky scandal. Whatever an opposing fan base can say to get under your skin they will. It’s up to you to not let it hurt you. The people who are using it know it’s not representative of your current program just as you are. It’s probably not even representative of who they are in real life to demean your school. People tend to act differently in the company of people who are like minded in their fandom, but I’m sure a vast majority of us have complete respect for Miami Hurricanes football and their organization. Don’t take offense to what is written on a fan board. If you’re willing to subject yourself to reading an opponent’s board you and your brethren need to have thick skin. 😉

Since IU is the higher seed/home team, does that mean we get Miami's locker room?
Since we're the "home" team, we will.
Since we're the "home" team, we will.
It's not as sexy though since it's an NFL stadium too & not like going into Ross Ade and parking it in the home locker room. I imagine it's a fairly sterile environment & both locker rooms are nice.
@tmft - It is taking some Miami fans by surprise when they look at purchasing tickets and notice they are behind the visitors bench. So the Hurricanes will have an unfamiliar view of their field in that respect.
If IU can run the ball, and slow down their run game... IU will win the game, probably handily. But that's obviously much easier said, than done. Miami could present an equally big challenge to OSU... and we struggled to move the ball on them. And I think Miami's run game, and offensive line, is probably better than OSUs.
I hate this matchup, honestly. We've had 3 difficult games this year... and if we're being honest and fair, it took good fortune in all of them to help us win them... and Miami is likely a better version of 2 of those opponents, and on par with OSU, overall. I think we're going to need to play really, really well to win this game.
This is likely going to be a rock fight. If Ole Miss had held on that last drive, I would feel A LOT better about this game. But winning a Natty is rarely easy. At some point you have to beat teams that you aren't suited as well to beat. I'm sure Cig, and the staff, will have them ready for the challenge.
