@thehoosierhuddle Just a guess...but when Fernando leaves, if they don't think Alberto is ready to be the man, they'll go after an older, more proven quarter back similar to Rourke and Fernando.
I would be surprised if they'd target the Maryland quarterback. Doesn't what they've done in the past. Byrum Brown maybe from South Florida. Josh Hoover maybe. If either of those guys have a year of eligibility left.
Or maybe they land an elite high 4 star QB they like from HS, and roll with Alberto until that kid is ready?
@iunorth Go get Colton Joseph from ODU.
They will need a transfer QB no matter what. Here's where it's different than a year ago. There is no spring portal window. So, IU can't give Alberto the keys and then say if he's not ready, go get a QB. I expect, like you said, to get a veteran, experienced QB. I assume it'll follow the Cignetti philosophy of production over potential, but IU will 100% need a portal QB both for depth and to push for the starting job.

I see them going to the portal for a veteran guy. Josh Hoover was once verballed to IU under Allen but got out when he saw the ship was sinking. We replaced him with Sorsby. Both turned out pretty good. Allen actually had some very good QB rooms. I have a gut feeling it wasn’t as much of an open competition as it is today.
i think by next year, little Mendoza will be very good. They may bring in someone to compete but he has a real shot at getting the job. You got guys like Cash Herrera coming in. I’d be surprised if Cherry stays. He’s just that far behind now. Alberto has a next level speed escaping the pocket. He’s more of a true dual threat. Fernando can get out of the pocket but he doesn’t have the burst like Alberto. I think Cig is very high on him and I’d like to see us pick up 2 WR studs in the portal. Becker will get major minutes but we need to be on it and load up in the WR and TE rooms.
@big-red-cb-v-2-0 It's going to be a pretty large portal class it looks like. Probably around 20. Depends on who leaves to go pro that's borderline (Cooper, Ferrell Smith?)
I hope those underclassmen stay, but it’s going to be pretty cool to see so many of our guys get drafted.
Portal season is getting close. Will have to check on ESPZYN again here soon.
The day is not over
I'm holding out hope
@thehoosierhuddle Colton would be my pick too to compete with Alberto. He is very mobile as we all know, but he throws the hell out of the ball. Bet we could also get him relatively cheap compared to some of the QBs who will hit the portal, since he isnt as well known and ODU fell of the radar weeks ago
I really hope you’re right. I just want to remain realistic. We don’t have a ready made team from JMU ready to jump in the portal to join like we did 2 years ago, but I will be more than happy if we make it 3 straight years of 10+ wins. 🙂Happily seen enough in 2 seasons to be more optimistic.
