Some of you know I was pushing for a late kickoff for last weekends UCLA game.  I had a conflict, but knew if I couldn’t go there would be no problem selling the tickets and parking pass.

Well in our section 29 about a week before the game the cheapest ticket was around $300.  As the week went on the prices CRASHED.  I finally sold all 4 seats for $99. The face was $63 so I barely broke even after paying the SeatGeek commission.  The parking pass price also crashed.

I really thought with UCLA becoming respectable again the prices would remain stable.

Anyone have a hypothesis as to what happened?  It’s not like it wasn’t sold out right?

Did UCLA return a bunch of tickets?  Anyone have this same issue?

Yeah, my guess is that people selected the "Smart Sell" option and it hit some sort of deadline and crashed prices. I Sold my BIL parking pass for $100 and 2 seats for $103 each. They sold in about five minutes last Sunday.

@thehoosierhuddle what section are you?  My brother said the day after the UCLA game is when prices started to drop.  Dunno why.  Kinda early to be hitting that smart sell button right?

i hypothesize that some of these people dumped tickets at the last minute to get up to Gainbridge and camp out Saturday night for the big exhibition with Baylor.  All 4,200 of them.

I thought Saturday was a weird vibe.  We got to Lot 12 around 10 am and the lot wasn't as full as I was expecting.   We went into the stadium about 11:15 and even as we were getting closer to kickoff, it just seemed like a late arriving crowd to get into the stadium.

I'm not sure how to say it more diplomatically than "Indiana just doesn't have a good fan base yet."  I agree that Saturday felt weird in the stadium to a degree.  I was surprised that as many students left at half as did.  I gave them a pretty strong pass the week prior because of the storm delay when so many left, but the non-student crowd came back really well for Michigan State.

I'll probably chalk it up to us not knowing what to do with dominant wins like that.  The exception being the Illinois game.  It was a night game and it was a lot of pent up rage coming out with that beatdown and everyone pretty well stayed.

Things I'd like to see:

(1) all games sell out, at least on paper

(2) all games at least look 90% "full" at kickoff, even if that only means 80% attendance with people having the chance to stretch out a little bit.

(3) students stay for at least 3/4 of all games, even blowouts

I'll take being undefeated.  And that's it.  Because none of the rest of it really matters that much anymore.

@tmft Most of the students were at BNK which ended at noon, so they came in late. The game was a blow out and the weather probably played a factor into it.

It's also a noon game.

To @gros-louis's point it may not really matter. Tickets are sold, people went in and bought their stuff. The game was 35-3 at half time. People want to watch games on their TVs on the couch in the comfort of their home. The three-minute TV time outs and the needless reviews really suck the air out of any stadium.

Would I like for people to have stayed? Sure, I never understood leaving a game early unless it's an emergency. However, I am not just a regular fan.

@bradstevens For what it’s worth, I find ticket prices decline until about 24 hours before the game, then it levels out.

Glancing at SeatGeek Wisky tix are all over $100.  I’m pretty sure those prices are gonna fall quite a bit.

@gros-louis it does matter, it impacts our recruiting

South Carolina’s stadium was rocking despite their season being over (as in likely don’t even make a bowl game over) and they were there with a loud packed stadium

meanwhile we are #2 in the country our stadium has looked full throughout for a single game this season (Illinois). It doesn’t give recruits the impression we are in fact a football school

It was a strange game.  My wife and I got a late start for the game, so we were worried that inbound traffic would be bad, but it wasn't.

There were hardly any UCLA fans, as expected, and there's not really any kind of rivalry to motivate folks.

But the stands were pretty full at kickoff and the Green lot was full.  It was obvious, early on that it wasn't going to competitive.  Even UCLA's coaches seemed to acknowledge it, punting in spots where they had nothing to lose by going for it.

Traffic after the game was more disastrous than normal.  If they don't get that fixed, people will keep leaving early to beat traffic.  We stayed, and in hindsight, I regret it.  It took more 5han 2 hours to make the 55 minute trip to midtown indy.

Our crowds could be better, but it also takes some time to build up a fan base.  Last year you could get tickets for $10 to B1G games, now it’s $60+ to get in for bad B1G opponents.

South Carolina was trying to upset Alabama.  IU had an uncompetitive game vs UCLA.  There is a big difference there.

No.  Our recruiting was impacted when we were losing games and didn't have NIL to give them.  If we were a #2 school and the stadium was half full, it would impact recruiting.  That hasn't been the case.  The games are sold out.  Outside of early departures for weather or blowouts, which happens everywhere, it's not going to negatively impact recruiting.
