@olympian97 I also thought Cig's extension this year got some added compensation or protections for the Assts.
I think they keep upping the salary pool for assistants and said something about keeping it competitive in the top 10 salary pool or something to that effect.
@thehoosierhuddle Haines has led back to back years of top 10 defenses, and hes pulled together a bunch of blue chip recruits in the 2026 class. Both of those is unheard of at IU. He had G5 HC offers last year I believe, I would be really surprised if he isnt getting at least some interest from one of the many P4 job openings
As you mentioned, the big concern is who he could take with him. Losing him could pillage our commit class and younger assistant coaches
@hoosierdaddy The Power 4 Jobs open are Arkansas, Florida, Penn State, LSU, UCLA, Va Tech, Auburn, Oklahoma State and Stanford.
I just don't see those programs going after him and taking a chance on some one with no HC experience and the ones that would, why would you leave a $2 million + DC job in the Big Ten?
As it stands right now, I am not too worrried. However, that could change

I suppose it boils down to how much he would value money vs. running his own show if that's something he really wants to do. Either way he's got no financial worries.
He is a young coach with a lot of experience, and with as many HC jobs open, there is no way his phone isnt ringing daily.
In my opinion, there is no coach (outside of Cig) who is more crucial to our program long term than Haines. His defenses are filthy. We have allowed more than 14 points once all year. He also seems to be our best recruiter. Even after the PSU game, the only other team in the country who has not allowed more than 24 points all season is OSU.
If the Cooks or Mark Cuban read the this board, please go Phil Knight mode and offer him a kings ransom life time contract like what Lanning has. Make him the coach in waiting officially or unofficially.
How many D1 coaches go on X/Twitter and tell opposing fans to put their clown shoes on and dance for him? This guy needs to be a lifer at IU. Few coaches have the fiery personality other programs wouldnt put up with, but what IU fans crave.
I think it depends on if he really wants to be a head coach. Saw an interview with CCC when he talked about how he got hooked up with Haines initially. Seems like Haines really wanted to be a DC when CCC already had one. CCC chose to keep him and move him to co-DC. Moved up from there. I got the impression that he really wants to be a DC and probably could have already moved to HC in the last 8-9 years with CCC. He is getting big money now and maybe he just wants to be a DC
It is a big risk leaving a gig like this to do your own thing. Who knows if you will have the resources and recruiting chops to be successful. I can see a guy might want to test himself but if it were me, I would stick it out a few more years at IU and bank enough of this great money to not have to worry about the risk.

But apparently to many Ohio State fans, and some SEC fans, the success isn't sustainable because Cig has done so much more with less roster depth and talent.
Or something. LOL It's very difficult to follow the 'not sustainable' argument when they say it's because he doesn't have the same roster talent as the big boys. (To which I say, maybe, YET ... lol )
