General Playoff Speculation

Just a few comments on the original playoff rankings....

--I'm interested in BYU at 7 and TT at 8.  I think most fans think TT is the better team.  What happens if TT waxes BYU this Saturday (at TT), and then BYU wins the BIG 12 CG by 1 point?  Both teams probably get in, possibly knocking out an SEC team.

--Georgia at GT, the final WE of the season, is interesting.  GT is 8-1.  Hard to keep them out if they finish with 1 loss and beat Georgia.

--What happens if Michigan beats OSU & Oregon runs the table?  Michigan's losses (at OK, at USC) were pretty decisive.

--Speaking of Oregon....They still have Iowa at Iowa, USC at home, and at Washington.  I think they're still in if they go 2-1 and beat USC.

Interesting games the rest of the year:

--OSU at Michigan

--A& M at MO and at TX

--Bama has OK at home, at Auburn

--Georgia..TX at home, at GT.  Lose both and they're out.

--Ole Miss...FL at home

--BYU..at TT, at Cincy

--TT...BYU at home

--Oregon...At Iowa, USC, at Wash

--TX..at GA, A&M at home

--OK...At Bama, MO

--Virginia..at Duke

--GT...Georgia at home

--USC--Iowa, at ORE

--Iowa..ORE, at USC

--UM...OSU

Outcomes Im rooting for:

  • GT over UGA, GT would be a much easier opponent

  • BYU over TTU, TTU has a scary good defensive front and some explosive guys on offense. BYU plays smashmouth football. I think BYU would be easier to beat. They also run a really simple defense, which would get killed by a team thats as efficient as we are.

  • Duke taking the ACC bid somehow someway. The G5 bid would be a tougher game than them.

  • Texas to lose to UGA or A&M, their offense is starting to put it together. Its been fun watching them fall on their face this season, but they are looking better by the week and have a really high ceiling in terms of player talent

  • OSU over Michigan. I do not want OSU to be playing with their hair on fire when we meet them.

  • Pitt over Notre Dame, ND does not deserve a playoff bid. I also think whoever replaces them (likely Utah or Vanderbilt) would be easier

in my eyes this post redeems your old man yelling g at clouds post about the hoops game.

Texas Tech wins both. They’re just better.

Pretty sure GT is at UGA and that is enough to give UGA the victory and eliminate GT.

Oregon needs to go 2-1. I’m struggling with who to root for this weekend from an IU perspective. Or does it even matter? Maybe only matters if we stumble in Happy Valley.

I probably doesn’t matter much, but I wouldn’t mind Oregon winning to bolster our claim of having the best win in CFB.  That’s a a nice fact in the endless ranking debates.

That GT Georgia game is definitely at GT.....over the years they've played Georgia tough there.  Also, Georgia's played a lot of tight games.  A low-scoring game gives GT a shot.  Georgia seems on the uptick tho., and they'll probably still have 30000 fans there.  Should be a hell of an atmosphere.  I think GT would have maybe a 10% chance at Georgia but more than a puncher's chance (maybe 35%) in Atlanta.

I don't know if 2-1 gets Oregon in if the loss is at home to USC.  Sounds like a play-in game.

Subject to developments I think the SEC gets 5 in, the BT 3, the Big 12 & ACC 1 each, ND 1,  1 G5 team.  If something happens that pretty much requires the Big 10, ACC or Big 12 to get 1 more, I think it comes from the SEC ranks.  Those games mentioned were the scenarios where that could happen.  Also, someone mentioned ND at Pitt.  That's an interesting game now.  Any one of those 4 situations is unlikely to occur......but statistically at least one of those (Pitt over ND; GT over GA; Mich over OSU; or the TT/BYU situation) is probably likely.

@mushroomgod GT UGA is at the Mercedes Benz Stadium.  I guess they wanted the money.  More or a neutral site feel for that game now at best depending how tickets are controlled.  Could easily be 70% UGA fans though…

@tammany If Iowa and Oregon both finish 9-3, they may give Oregon a spot in the 20s but they wont rank Iowa. Need to keep the seat warm for 8-4 Tennessee.

I want Oregon to win out, helps ensure we get a bye no matter what if we finish regular season 12-0

The absolute worst case scenario would be to make the CCG, lose it, and then get dropped from having a bye. Those bastards would 100% do that to us.

Wow......that really sucks for the GT players and fans......Guess when you're not a BT or SEC team these days you're going to do what you gotta do to bring in some cash.......Maybe they at least sold all the tickets they could to GT fans before they opened up to the GA fans?

Brings to mind the time IU sold the PSU game away....I looked that up.  It was in 2010, when Lynch was HC, Glass AD.  We got $3M to move the game to Redskins' stadium in Maryland.  What I remember most was how silly it was to have our band and cheerleaders there acting like it was an IU home game.....O, the bad old days.........

@mushroomgod I don’t know how they’re doing this tickets.  But yea, if they lose a close game and mess up their postseason chances they’re gonna wonder how it could have went on their home field.

Oregon wins on a late FG.  Another gut punch loss for Iowa.

Ive changed my mind on the OSU/Michigan game - I want Michigan to win. Michigan win there would cement the Heisman for Mendoza, which would give us our first Heisman.

OSU also has a younger roster this year... Im not sure they would respond as well to a loss as their guys did last year. Last year it was a bunch of seniors who hadnt won anything during the tenure and they fought to leave a legacy instead of being the first OSU class in decades to not win either a B1G title or national title

Just a reminder it is the 5 highest ranked conference champions that get an automatic bid. It doesn’t matter what conference.

@thehoosierhuddle Will be interesting to see if/where the committee ranks JMU and UNT/USF.

If Duke wins the ACC, it is possible the ACC doesnt get a single bid in.
