@albino Yeah, the ceremonial/guest pace car driver only drives at the start, because during the race, they are dealing with wrecks, keeping the field in order, etc... so it's a pro at that point. He even joked that his instructor (former female Indy Car driver?) was only worried about how quickly he could get his ass out of the seat so she could get in and be ready.
It was fun to see him and I agree with the adage that any publicity is good publicity, but what is the viewership for the race, and who actually watches it? Thinking it's largely watched in the midwest and by racing fans, but I don't know how many of those folks there are nationwide. I asked within my poker group, which would be 8 mostly 45-65 yo white male sports fans and don't think one, other than me watched. 4 are from IN/OH, 1 WI and 3 Carolinians.
TV rating is around 7 million. IndyCar is Midwest focused but anyone in the country/world who likes racing will watch.
The 300-325K people at the race is a pretty diverse mix nowadays. Rowdy young people in the infield and old rich folks in the fancy seats.
Cig got an huge reception when he was introduced. He is so popular in Indiana it’s crazy.
Sarah Fisher is usually the pace car driver.
If you never been to the race, you must go atleast once! It’s on most people’s bucket lists. I’ve been goin since 1989-90, and have loved every minute of it!
@hoosieralum07 I have been several times, but not since I moved away around 1990. I'm not a race fan, but I love the nostalgia and do watch or at least keep tabs. Don't really watch any other racing.
