Saw some highlights from TCU/NC, and the comments were brutal concerning Belichick. 1/5 were about his GF, 1/5 were about Brady not being around, the majority were nasty. I don't like the guy either, but it shows how quickly people can turn......Anyway, I was thinking why Cig's experience was so different since both situations were a total rebuild--
--73 v. 63.
--Influx of JMU players who knew the score.
--Intact staff.
--More favorable starting schedule.
--Less hype/pressure.
--A legit QB.
Most interesting question to me is why they went with the kid from South Alabama at QB.
The UNC brass seemed oblivious as to what was going to happen, and came across as very foolish.

Coaching college kids vs. pro guys is quite different -- no surprise there. We just experienced this issue on the basketball side. Most pro coaches aren't good in college, and yes there are a few examples here and there, but not many.
There is a lot of nuance to selecting college players and recruiting them. A lot of that can only come with experience that Bill doesn't have. A lot of recruiting analysts said they took guys in the portal no one really wanted.
And then there is developing and getting the most from 18-22 year olds. It's just different from elite pros -- there has to be more focus on the basics and working with more limited skillsets. Bill has never done this, and he has the huge challenge of getting 70 new guys to gel.
The other risk they have is portal heavy teams do have a tendency to quit if the going gets tough and the season starts to slip. That could happen here.
It looks like it's going to be a stupid and embarrassing hire. Which is great -- I don't like UNC.

Great point that Cig was a career college coach....
There had to be some onlookers that knew the first game was going to be ugly. That's why UNC looks so foolish hyping the hell out of it, inviting the legends back et al. I feel bad for BB, but not for UNC. Like you, I'll enjoy watching the train wreck.
Interesting question is....is there any hope or is it a lost cause? I feel like its 80-20 that it won't get much better.
@mushroomgod Agree on 80/20 it won't get better. They do have an easy schedule. But mercenary portal types may quit here and frankly they have so many issues it's going to be hard to fix. Maybe they get to six wins and a crappy bowl -- that seems like their ceiling. Not great for the $10M they're paying bill and the extra money they spent on the team.
Looks like a very foolish move by UNC, and that's on top of the embarrassing Jordan Hudson side show.
@tammany Best guess... Belichik will revert to his Patriots methods here pretty soon when things get really tough... and college kids just don't respond the same as Pros do. Especially portal kids. Double especially if you didn't properly vet most of the portal kids to have a good handle on whether or not they could handle the challenge.
So... I see him kicking guys out of practices here soon, if he isn't already. I see him kicking guys off the team. And I see him alienating himself from the locker room more and more. Social media will pick up on it. And his tenure at UNC won't last long.
Him dating a 25 year old is an enormous red flag to start with. Him dating that particular one is a flashing neon warning sign. Him allowing her the voice and access to the UNC football program, is disqualifying... If I were the President, or anyone with the power, that wasn't a part of or behind hiring him...I'd be pushing hard for making the move now. The girlfriend thing is such glaring evidence that he isn't going to be able to handle college coaching.
Belichik's genius was heavily reliant on his ability to keep an entire organization on task with his process. Its already obvious he won't be able to do that at UNC. So it isn't going to go well.
Don't forget the NCAA limits the amount of time you can practice. The NFL does not and that is a huge adjustment.

@thehoosierhuddle from what I know of Belchik's process and program, with the Patriots, its just not realistic to expect him to pull it off with college aged kids. And he's already not following his own script, by all acounts, with how he built his first team. Belichik was always incredibly selective with the guys he went after, and who he kept, with the Patriots.
And then, to your point, if he doesn't have the practice time to impart his vast football specific knowledge... no chance.

Here's the other thing.....his personality is so dour.
Players have bought into him in the past because he was a winner and the smartest guy in the room. Nobody's going to have personal loyalty to him because they like him so much or he's so loyal to them. And now he doesn't look like a winner or the smartest guy in the room. And, because of his age, he needed a fast start. This situation may not last past this year.
Don't forget the NCAA limits the amount of time you can practice. The NFL does not and that is a huge adjustment.

It is much harder for an NFL coach to hit the ground running in college. Biggest issue is number 2 on your list. Unless his NFL staff all wants to make the jump to college, BB/pro coaches have the challenge of finding an entirely new staff. That takes time away from building the team and then the risk that they didn't find the right guys the first time around and have to replace them after the season. It takes time for a coaching staff to mesh just like it takes time for players to mesh as a team.
Compare that with Cigs who had already built his connections with college coaches and brought just over 50% of the staff with him from JMU (including the coordinator positions). He only had a handful of position coaches to fill and thus hit the ground running.
BB/pro coaches also have to learn (and be willing to do so) the whole aspect of recruiting players. Being famous and being able to tell people you have pro/NFL connections only goes so far (see Woodson).
If you want/expect to hit the ground running quickly with a new coach, then don't hire a NFL coach that is likely going to take time to get things rolling and that assumes they actually can get it rolling and figure it out. UNC better hope that BB puts effort into recruiting and isn't their version of lazy Woodson.
