@bar-down Yea, I can see some B12 and ACC teams having a really long shot change to ever make it.

For the P2, this probably means something like 40% of their members getting in.

Petitti was the driver here.  The ACC, Big 12 and Notre Dame signaled their approval in the Spring, and the SEC signed on in August.

From the NYT/The Athletic: "[Petitti's] reasoning centered around opportunity and hope.  With roster spending ballooning to tens of millions of dollars, too many schools were spending too much money with little hope of making a 12-team field.  A 24-team field would keep more teams in the mix, something athletic directors and coaches could sell to fans as success."

I don't like the larger playoff, but I can see this reasoning.  Not sure if this will really help, but maybe it will, tbd.

As for the G6, they're just nothing like the P4.  It's really a minor league unfortunately.

This new format gets ~1/3 of the P4 into the playoff.  Several of those teams will have no chance to win it, but they'll technically be in.

Agreed on all counts.

Another thought.  We (IU fans) are feeling fat and happy, and maybe a little smug, after going 2 for 2 (in making the field) in the current iteration of the CFP.  There are going to be years, though, where we wouldn't be good enough for selection to a 12-team field.  In some of those seasons, we'll probably be very grateful for the expanded field.

In the long run I think it'll help us.

Doesn't mean it doesn't suck. But overall, we get in a bit more, bit more of the home playoff game.

The home game years will be cool. If we win.

@openwheel like everything there's winners and losers.  all of this stuff inures to the benefit of iu.  money and the largest alumni network in the country ish erased a century of ineptitude.  and don't get me wrong.  that's not to detract from cig bc he is the goat, but still.  the losers are the G6 schools save a very small group who have some money.  the best and easiest cure to level the playing field a bit is to limit transfers to one

If this 100% goes to ESPN, was Fox's angle to get an overpay out of its competitor with the idea that when the contract is up in 2031 they will come strong on a bid once all wrinkles are ironed out?

I don't see how this playoff system will not reduce the value of regular season games for Fox, CBS, and NBC.  I would think a significant portion of the value of those games relates to the question of whether traditional power teams like Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, USC, PSU will make the playoff.  How does this not reduce the interest in a Michigan-PSU or Nebraska-USC regular season game?  It might make things more interesting for Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue but those games aren't on TV, and nobody wants to watch them anyway.

The only positive is the league championship games will be gone.

@iunorth lol, the B1G has pushed this hard so they better be fixing the bias. Expanding to 24 only gets in 5, which is the same number the over-rated SEC got last year in the 12 team format? We've had 3 str8 years of the SEC being exposed across the playoff and head-to-head bowl games against all the "weak" B1G teams that couldn't survive an SEC 'grind' yet keep beating SEC teams in the postseason.

@surjay getting rid of preseason rankings isn't a panacea for what you're bitching about but i do think it would help.  help get rid of some of the baked in legacy ranking advantages

@bar-down yep, its part of it, or at least allow for bigger drop-offs once games start. NW, Neb fighting half the season to even enter the polls while LSU can lose every week and never drop out.

It's unfair! Because of the SEC grind, they are too beaten up to win in the playoffs.

Gotta get the narrative right.

Herbstreit was crying again today on a video I saw about the SEC getting beat up through their gauntlet and other atrocious things.

I'm glad those numb nuts are not in Bloomington  this weekend.
