Interesting.  The staff must feel very good about Alberto given what they could try and probably get in the portal.

Nice thing is I don't have any reason to second guess this staff and I can just watch and learn.

They really like him, but they're going to bring in someone they think can win not only the job, but the conference as well.

We're going to attract some really good portal kids, not only at qb, but all over the roster.

Personally, if they're happy with the QBs they've got returning, I think they'll go look for another Grant Wilson, a small school QB looking to finish up their career.  Not someone they expect to start or even necessarily compete for a starting spot, but (a) someone who has been productive elsewhere, (b) is self aware enough to know that the NFL is not in their future, (c) wants to work on the big stage, even if an understudy, and (d) can be gotten relatively inexpensively while they use college sports as it was intended, e.g., Wilson is at Kelley working on his MBA.

A high character kid who "gets it" can be invaluable as a mentor to the young guys.  Can still give quality reps.  Can leave ego at the door and take advantage of the opportunity.

Without knowing much other than age & stats, two guys that pop out at me are Delaware QB Nick Minicucci & App St. QB AJ Swann.  I can't imagine they're going to be having any major paydays coming their way.  If the staff likes them they could be a quality backup for 1 year, get a little money, and help them jumpstart the rest of their lives.

I agree. However, I don’t see them over paying for a quarterback. They’ll get what the staff thinks they need to compete for a title, but they’ve been really effective in how they use their NIL funds.

If we get a portal guy, and he loses out to Alberto, it would be tough for him to get up to speed to be ready.

Rourke and Fernando got first team practice minutes. And even then Cig (and Fernando) have made comments about how it took time this fall and some games to grasp everything.

But, if we can get a portal guy with more than a year left, would be good. That seems harder and more expensive though.

Also, Cherry should be 100% and mentally into it. Unless he's been sitting around, not studying football. Which isn't likely.

If he has the talent, which is what we really don't know, he should be ready to back up.

I guess we'll find out by Cig's moves in the portal. Which level he goes after.

@openwheel We'll see how his recovery went, but he's been locked in on the mental side of things

Like most positions the best available for the value the portal offers.  Only way to do business.

yup, the only question is how much money we willing to throw around.   Would tell us how much faith they have in Alberto being starter.

There's an argument to be made that going with Alberto and expecting his floor to be a slightly above average game manager and investing QB funds to make all the other position groups very solid to elite, kind of like Georgia does, is the optimal strategy.

So much depends on how the portal landscape unfolds and IUs ability to cherry pick the elite talent and production that will  be available from the coaching change merri-go-round.

@thehoosierhuddle no argument from me.

If there's one thing I'm not going to do, it's question Cig when it comes to qbs and who he wants.

Pre-NIL, Pre-transfer era . Pre above-board payments.

Barry Switzer when coach of the Dallas Cowboys had some injuries to deal with, and was asked what he was going to do.

He said something such as , paraphrase, 'we'll buy the best player available, same as we did at Oklahoma". Grin

ASU is my second team. There is a lot of chatter Leavitt is going to portal. I would have no problem, with him winding up in Bloomington.

@lncolnpk would be concerned with injury history, but he can ball.
