The discussion about other guys that might hit the portal, has me thinking about something. I know the belief for Fernando was that if he leaves this year, his brother takes over, but do you think that's what Cig will do? I don't think he'll turn it over to someone he has any doubt about as a QB and, despite his running, I can't say I'm sold on Alberto as a starter next year. Do you think he looks any better than Tayven Jackson did, and he let him walk. With the year Fernando is having, many high level QBs would be interested in coming here. MD and MSU's QBs both looked very solid. What do you think happens with our QB spot next year?

@kkott From what I have heard, IU is all in on Alberto. The wildcard here is Tyler Cherry and if he can come back for injury. I do think IU gets a portal QB, but it does not have to be a superstar.

Chiles and Williams have so far to go in terms of being good passers, I am not sure even Cig/Shanahan (if he's here) can help them.

Anyway, even if Alberto isn't ready in their eyes to be the guy NEXT YEAR, they could get another 1-year starter, convince Alberto to stay, and then hand him the keys for his final 2 years.  You wouldn't bring in someone the same class as him in that case.

@thehoosierhuddle Yeah, Alberto is clearly a better runner and stockier. He doesn't have to be the same as Fernando, but he does have to be accurate and not make mistakes. Obviously, his running could really be an asset. I forget who it was, but I heard some podcaster (might've been you) say that he thinks he'll take a QB in the portal, but as you said, someone to maybe provide competition and depth, but not an obvious starter.

I think Alberto has been better than Jackson

15/21 (71.4%) for 204 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 9.7 yd average

Last year,

Jackson was 23/37 (62.2%) for 359 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 9.4 yd average

I think Alberto is every bit as fast/mobile as Jackson was...maybe even more so.

I think Cigs will get the best QB he can get and let the competition sort it out.

Of course, he may not offer up as much NIL money if he likes Alberto a lot but he wouldn't turn down a good/great QB if the price was right.

@kkott IU will lose two scholarship QBs this offseason with Fernando and Grant Wilson. IF Cherry can go, that is kind of getting one back. Cash Herrera is a nice prospect, but IU will need another experienced QB on the roster.

i hope they add a better qb.

we've seen nothing from alberto outside of garbage time minutes.

if he's the guy the staff is all in on, then i'm good with that, but i want them to bring someone in to challenge him at minimum.

I'm sold on Alberto, and definitely think he looks better than TJ did....toughness being a big selling point.  I like him as the starter.

That said, it's a dicey situation.  Cherry was hurt, and ran behind Alberto as a freshman when he wasn't.  Bell is a true freshman and Herrera will be a true freshman next year.  If Alberto went down, things probably would not go well.

So.....I think Cig looks to get the best transfer he can get and lets them fight it out.  Potential problems......who would come here with Alberto looking like the de facto starting QB?  I would think a tie goes to Alberto.  So.....as a practical matter it almost has to be a veteran guy who clearly projects as better than Alberto, or an experienced guy, like Grant Wilson, who projects as less than Alberto.

Yeah, probably will see what the portal offers. But if Cherry is healed, he should be near backup ready. Or one of our others. Cig does need to develop QBs from within eventually, to get recruits to come. But its not as if Alberto is a big name recruit.

Alberto doesnt have the strongest arm, good though, it looks strong enough, and he seems accurate. Ill feel OK if he wins the job. He looks like a guy who can just play football. Sort of a Sorsby in a different style. Tayven still doesnt have that feel, at UCF this year, has the arm but just never looks natural at figuring things out on the fly.

Alberto reminds me of Rourke a bit but a better runner. If he could get that good...

We're getting a qb out of the portal.

We are definitely bringing in a QB in the portal. The question is, will it be a guy more like Grant (have an experienced guy who isnt B1G starter caliber) or will it be more a Fernando type. I think the answer to that question is going to depend on things way out of our control (who actually enters the portal).

If a NFL prospect QB hits the portal, I dont see why Cig wouldnt or shouldnt try and get him.

We're going to get a guy that can come in and play, better then Grant Wilson.

There's no way Cig lets this team go in next year with Alberto, Jacob Bell and Cash Herrera as the qb room.  Tyler Cherry is an unknown who, even if he does come back, how good will he after no live game action for almost 2 years?

@kkott I think they have to get a portal QB. Especially if Cherry isn't full go by spring ball. This is where having one Portal window really hurts. Instead of waiting to see how Alberto plays and how Tyler Cherry progresses and re-evaluating needs, coaches have to kind of predict what may happen and err on the side of "worst case".

Fernando is going to go to the NFL. Grant Wilson graduates. So that leaves Alberto (RS Soph), Jacob Bell (RS Fr) and Cash Hererra (Fr) with possibly Tyler Cherry (Rs Fr?) as your scholarship QBs. It shouldn't be the superstar QB, but they need someone who could win the job and would be OK with potentially backing up Alberto.

It'll be Alberto's job to lose, but IU needs some more experience there.
