@yothn after going back and listening to the question and answer again I’m actually not sure and could be reading into Cigs answer too much. The reporter says Alberto told him he was staying and asked Cig if he sees him winning the job next year. Based on that part alone it sounds like Alberto is confirmed staying, but Cig’s answer is what is confusing.
The confusing part about how Cig answered the question was that he said Alberto told him he has to leave early which was the exact same answer he gave last year about Fernando. Also, Hoover is in his last year of eligibility which makes the answer strange since unless I’m missing something Hoover would be out of eligibility anyways. So, that’s why on first review it sounded like he was answering the question as if he was talking about his experience with recruiting Fernando last year, because I can still recall Cig saying in an interview several months ago Alberto told him he would transfer if Fernando were to stay more than 1 year. Then he says “we will see with Alberto”. It’s hard to say whether he is answering the question to say we will see how he competes with Hoover or if he is still unsure about his commitment for next year. Unless Alberto just coincidentally gave Cig the same response as last year it just seemed like a curious answer. Like I said I hope he is staying. So, maybe it was just a misunderstanding.

@olympian97 I saw on you tube the clip YOTHN referred to and it was of Alberto at the CFB press conference and he indicated that he was looking forward to coming back and competing for starting position.  Unfortunately, I am not good at copy and pasting here.  But it is there.

@olympian97 - That usa today article is what I'm talking about...

"Mendoza says he will compete with Hoover for the starting job, and says Fernando told him to go win the job instead of waiting. Force Indiana and Cignetti into a difficult decision."

An article from the HT, may be behind a pay wall, but it basically says Alberto wants to come back next year and compete for the starting job

after listening to Cigs full interview I’m not sure that this is accurate. I haven’t read the article on HT, but this sounds like a misinterpretation of what was said. Cig was talking about what Alberto said last year when they brought in Fernando. He didn’t sound certain that Alberto was returning when directly asked. I hope I’m wrong, but this sounds like there was a misinterpretation. I hope it’s true that those words came directly from Alberto though and not based on a misinterpretation of what Cig said.

This was based on what Alberto told a reporter. Not what Cig said. He may change his mind but that is the story now.

Here's another quick way to view the (theoretical) starting lineups:

It’s difficult to think ahead to 2026 at the moment, but I’m really liking this roster and Cig isn’t done yet.

yeah, the roster is really good and we don't know what leaps some of the younger guys are even going to make.

they're also going to continue to add.

@iureactionary

Has Kaiden Turner left or jumped into the Portal?

he went through senior day...typically that's a pretty good sign he's gone.

This was interesting and quite unexpected.

i didn't see this...if that's the case, i'll have to re-add wilson.

can you imagine getting paid to get an education and a phd in football?

Trying to add via the portal?  Hear anything about positions/visits?

IU Reactionary (on the Hoosier Huddle Football Forum) is a great tool to look at regarding the 2026 roster. As of noon 1/24 a total of 82 scholarship players are on the roster. Included are Cooper and Tucker. 85 players are allowed on scholarship by end of Spring practice per the IUR analysis. Not much room for additions but in Cig we trust. There's a possibility that some announcements from players on the current roster will be known to the public in the next 24 hours following the Saturday celebration. Not too many roster additions can take place but kudos to the coaching staff for earlier getting all the heavy lifting done.

that's true, but they also can cut down on the walk on's to get further under the 105 cap. they also currently have 82 scholarship players but utzinger was apparently given one last year. i don't have him listed as a scholarship player at this point because we don't know.

i thought tyler cherry wasn't with the team bc they wanted him to save a year but it appears they wanted an extra walk on player on the roster and him being on there injured didn't allow for that.

i think they still need or could want a LB, OL for depth and maybe a younger, developmental RB. that said, they're pretty loaded at a lot of positions and should be super picky.

Need an older, stronger TE for blocking schemes.
