The Indiana Hoosiers travel to South Bend on Friday night for a showdown in the first round of the College Football Playoff with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The winner of this historic contest will play the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. As is the case with any big game, there are so many interesting storylines, wrinkles and critical factors but the one that really stands out as a matchup of “best on best” is the Notre Dame running game against IU’s rushing defense.

The week has finally arrived leading up into the Hoosiers first College Football Playoff appearance. After stomping Purdue, the Hoosiers have been waiting patiently for the past few weeks for the chance to prove themselves. While it’s disappointing for the Hoosiers to not make the Big Ten Championship, it has proven beneficial to the team giving them an extra week to rest their bodies to ensure they are as healthy as they can be. The Indiana Hoosiers added bulk to their defensive line for the 2025 season with the commitment of 300-pound defensive tackle Hosea Wheeler, a transfer from Western Kentucky university. The former Hilltopper played in 30 games at WKU and earned First Team All-Conference USA honors for his play in 2024 as he recorded 74 tackles (five TFLs), two sacks and two blocked kicks.

IU Adds To Portal Class: Mitch McCarthy, UCF Punter, Commits to Hoosiers

The Indiana Hoosiers kicked off the portal season with the commitment of running back Lee Beebe from UAB and they continued it with a different kind of kicking as former UCF punter Mitch McCarthy joined the IU program as the second commit in the portal class. McCarthy has one year of eligibility remaining after punting for three seasons for the Knights. Originally from Australia, McCarthy trained at ProKick Australia in 2021 after injuries derailed his Australian Rules Football career. He averaged 41.3 yards per punt in 2023 and 44.13 on 40 punts in 2024. 17 of his 40 punts landed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line (42.5%) and five punts went more than 50 yards.
