What We are Watching For In Indiana's Spring Football Saturday in Bloomington

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The Indiana football program will hold their Spring Football Saturday event on Saturday in Bloomington as the Hoosiers wrap up their spring practice. IU will have an open practice capped off with an hour-long scrimmage for fans to see. The event also includes an indoor tailgate, carnival type games for kids and an autograph session after the game. Indiana head coach Tom Allen will also address the crowd.

While the spring event is mostly fun, Hoosier Huddle writers will be looking for several thing during the open scrimmage. Here is what our writers are watching for:

TJ Inman

The obvious one is quarterback. Beyond that, how does IU deploy the running backs spot? Do we see the multiback sets I am craving?

Second, what does the rebuilt secondary look like?

Zach Greene

On Offense

  • Sorsby vs Tayven aka (Trayce’s Brother).

  • Wide Receiver EJ Williams. Is he going get the targets?

  • Dexter Williams, who is back to running and progressing to get better everyday.

  • WR Donaven McCulley has the potential for a big season. Can line-up anywhere on the field?

On Defense

  • It has been on lock this spring.

  • Watch out for Tyrik McDaniel’s (Independence Community College)

  • Andre Carter! He’s had a monster spring practice.

  • The Vets

    • Linebacker Aaron Casey.

    • Defensive back Noah Pierre.

On offense my eyes will be on the offensive line. They have been emphasizing toughness in that group and it’s evident that the practices have been more physical. I want to see what the rotations are and can they play with an edge (as much as you can in the spring).

The wide receiver room is also going to be interesting to watch. IU is more diverse in that area than they have been in several years. Will we see some interesting combinations on Saturday?

On defense, my attention will be in the secondary where IU is being rebuilt with young players who have not seen the field yet and some veterans who arrived via the Transfer Portal.

Overall, I want to see a fun event Saturday that helps build and reward the fan base. It’s a spring game and while it is a practice and an opportunity for improvement, it is more of an opportunity to connect with fans.
