Three & Out Defense: Week 3 Bowling Green
/Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
The Hoosiers defense looked improved in the 28-10 victory over Indiana State, but can they string together a second straight solid performance. Here are the three keys to victory for the Hoosiers on defense.
1. Force A Turnover- The one thing the Hoosiers did not do was securing a turnover. They had their chances to get the ball back to the offense, but dropped an interception and had a fumble recovery called back because the runner was down. The defense has been in position to make plays. Now is the time to start taking advantage of those opportunities.
2. Create Pressure Upfront- Great defense starts with the big guys upfront. Bobby Richardson’s three sacks led IU in game one, but Bowling Green should prove to be a tougher test for the Hoosier line. If Ralph Green and the rest of the talented line should be able to hold their own against a MAC opponent.
3. Don’t Be A Hero On Special Teams- I am counting the kickoff and punt coverage teams on defense this week. The Falcons have had tremendous play on their return units so far this season. The Hoosiers cannot allow Bowling Green to break a big play in this aspect of the game. The players on the coverage units have to do their job and stay in their lanes and not try to be a hero on their own. A unit who plays as one will succeed in keeping big plays to a minimum.
