Scores From Around the Nation: IUFB Opponent Recap

Written By: Nate Comp (@NathanComp1)

75% of the season is complete and the Hoosiers remain clean in the loss column. Ahead for Indiana is the Curt Cignetti bulletin board material trio – Purdue, Michigan, and Ohio State. How did they fare this past week? Let’s take a look.

Overall Opponent Record Remaining Schedule: 13-12

Michigan (5-4): Last Week Loss vs Oregon 38-17

If you were score watching during the Hoosiers win over Michigan State this past weekend, you likely saw over on CBS the only other undefeated team in the conference handling Michigan relatively easily on the road. After Davis Warren was able to throw a touchdown pass to tie the game 7-7 in the first half, the Wolverines then trailed for the remainder of the game. Oregon amassed 304 yards in the first half alone and ultimately outgained the Wolverines 470-270. Michigan tried both quarterbacks, Warren and Orji, though Orji attempted only three passes and was more of a threat on the ground. The Wolverines were clean in the turnover game, but continue to struggle offensively and are unable to trust anyone behind center.

Ohio State (7-1): Last Week Win at Penn State 20-13

This felt like it may be the year for Penn State to seize their opportunity and defeat the Buckeyes, but James Franklin continues to struggle against Ohio State. The big concern going into the game for the Buckeyes was their line play – they had two new offensive linemen, and their defensive line had struggled to generate pressure. But, after four consecutive goal line stops from their D-line and an 11-play, 58 yard drive afterwards that drained the remainder of the clock, it seems there is no reason to worry about Ohio State’s line play on either side of the ball.

Purdue (1-7): Last Week Loss vs Northwestern 26-20 (OT)

Purdue does seem to be improving, as this is their second game in the last three that they have been able to push into overtime. In both overtime games, Ryan Walters has gone with the aggressive play and come up short. This time, the Boilers received the ball first in overtime and opted to go for it on fourth down, rather than kick the go-ahead field goal. They were unsuccessful, and two plays later Northwestern was able to win the game on a walk-off touchdown. The loss was their seventh and seemingly affirms that the Boilers will not be a part of postseason play this season.
