Reports: Indiana Defensive Coordinator Kane Wommack To Be Named Head Coach as South Alabama

Bloomington, Indiana used to be a dead end for football coaches, now with back-to-back winning seasons and a top-12 ranking the Hoosiers are seeing both sides of being a successful football team. According to multiple reports Indiana Hoosiers defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has agreed to terms to become the head coach at South Alabama.
Wommack, only 33 years old, has helped build one of the best defenses in his three years in Bloomington. The Hoosiers led the nation in interceptions with 17 and are fourth in the Big Ten in scoring defense allowing just 19.4 points per game. Allen originally hired Wommack from South Alabama, where he was the defensive coordinator, prior to the 2018 season. Wommack is also a Broyles Award Nominee for the nation’s top assistant coach.
This is the second consecutive off-season where an Indiana coordinator has taken a head coaching job. Kalen DeBoer left IU to become the head coach at Fresno State after rebuilding the Indiana offense in the 2019 season.
Bloomington is no longer a dead end for coaches and while it is a significant loss for the Indiana football program, Tom Allen and the Hoosiers are now a program who can advertise that they are a stepping stone to a head coaching position.
