Indiana’s new coaching regime made it clear that the tight end position would be utilized far more than in previous years. This was evidenced by senior Ian Thomas, who accumulated 25 catches and five touchdowns despite an injury-riddled season. Allen and DeBord need to replace Thomas’ production and add some more. Matt Bjorson is a big-bodied, athletic tight end from Chicagoland who will add immediate talent to the position group.

Bjorson chose the Hoosiers over Kentucky and several other schools in June. He’s been familiar with IU for some time thanks to IU’s football camp. "My football team went down for two years in a row for a summer camp, so I got to know the place really well," Bjorson said. "I just liked the new energy that Coach Allen brings and already liked the school, and the coaching staff pushed me over.” Allen and DeBord laud Bjorson for his leadership, and at 6-foot-3, 225lbs, he will have no issue adding muscle to his frame. According to his Hudl profile, his vertical jump exceeds 31 inches, and he clocked 4.51 seconds in the shuttle run: impressive for his size. Bjorson offered a little scouting report of himself, saying, "My speed and strength is the biggest thing. I am weighing 225 pounds right now, and at the beginning of the season I was running a 4.6 (second) 40 (yard dash). It is hard to cover someone that is my size that is running that fast."

Bjorson will soon find out how big and fast the Big Ten is, but he’s prepared. “This offseason, I drank a lot of chocolate milk. I drink gallons a day. I gained (about) 20 pounds in five weeks,” Bjorson claims. He cannot wait to complete the final step of his recruiting process, and will enjoy early signing day. "I think it's great because if you know where you are already going at this time, why should you wait any longer?" Bjorson said. "The season is done already, so sign early and you can focus on your future team." This summer, Hoosier Huddle wrote about how Bjorson had bought into the new culture forming within Indiana football. Today, Matt Bjorson will get to become part of that culture.
