Indiana head coach Tom Allen confirmed the report from Bruce Feldman that Indiana’s starting quarterback Michael Penix will miss the remainder or the season with a leg injury that he suffered in the third quarter against Maryland on Saturday. This is the third consecutive year Penix had his season cut short due to injury.
Allen said Penix had “torn his ACL, and he will be out for the season. And it's a really tough situation for all of us heartbreak for Michael family was here with him and thankful for that. But it's just tough time, and I really feel for him always worked to get back and the way he was playing and, and, but bottom line is, is that, you know, setbacks and adversity is part of this life and as we told our team, even last week you know it's how you respond to these challenges, define who you are, and great opportunity for him to grow.”
Allen later confirmed that it was the same leg that Penix injured as a freshman in 2018.
Penix is currently leading the Big Ten in passing yards and touchdown passes. He finishes the season completing 124-of-220 passes for 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns. He helped lead Indiana to a top 10 ranking and a 5-1 record this season.
Indiana will turn to redshirt sophomore Jack Tuttle to handle their quarterback duties. Tuttle finished the game against Maryland on Saturday and was 5-of-5 passing for 31 yards. Tuttle played in five games last season and completed 6-of-11 passes for 34 yards and ran for another 20 yards. Tuttle transferred from Utah prior to the 2019 season and is a former four-star recruit.
