The Indiana football program has been checking boxes that have not been checked in decades. A few weeks ago against Nebraska it was the ‘clinch bowl eligibility before Halloween’ box, two Saturdays ago it was the ‘winning season’ box. Now it’s the ‘be nationally ranked box’. it is something that has not happened since October of 1994. On Sunday afternoon both the Associated Press and the Amway Coaches Poll included the Hoosiers in their rankings. The Hoosiers are ranked 24th in the AP Poll and 25th in the Amway Coaches Poll.

The Hoosiers were idle this past weekend and sit at 7-2 (4-2) while riding a four-game winning streak. The Hoosiers have been taking steps forward as a program that some have been skeptical to believe over the first nine games of the season. These rankings are proof that there is something brewing in Bloomington and not just overly-optimistic fans drinking the Kool-Aid. No matter what happens in Happy Valley against the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, the Hoosiers should not apologize for their ranking.

While the ranking in the polls is a major milestone, Tom Allen will tell you that it is just a stop along the way to something bigger. There are still boxes that need to be checked that haven’t been touched in decades. When the No. 24/25 Hoosiers travel to No. 9/11 Penn State the Hoosiers will have a chance to check more boxes, including a win a Beaver Stadium and a win over a top-10 team. Tom Allen and the Hoosiers have their list and they are going through it game-by-game and checking off as many boxes as they can.
