Indiana head coach Tom Allen has broken the 2023 recruiting cycle into three phases. The first phase being the early signing period in which the Hoosiers signed 16 players. The second phase, which starts January 4th, is the transfer portal visit window. Finally, the third phase is the February signing day.
“This next phase is really a transfer phase of focus because you have a window from January 4th through the 9th where you can bring in players. It's only for transfers to be able to make visits to your campus. We can't go off campus, but they can come to us.” Allen said. “That's the real focus here to be able to fill some key spots, some positions of need, to be able to balance some of those off. It will be across the board both offensively and defensively.”
The Hoosiers have some clear needs in the transfer phase of this cycle, most notably at quarterback.
“We have three scholarship quarterbacks right now, and the goal is to add an additional one, an older one would be ideal.” Allen explained. “So that's the plan in terms of being able to have number four guys on scholarship in that room and especially with Dexter's status. We're just working through that process every single day. It's never ending. It will continue these next several weeks, and the goal is to have the guy in place here for second semester.”
Dexter Williams had “surgery and very successful surgery. He is now in the rehab process.” Allen said. However, his immediate future is still in doubt. That leaves Indiana in need of at least one quarterback, if not two from the transfer portal.
The transfer portal has become a life line for programs trying to rebuild on the fly and after just six wins in two seasons, IU is looking to the portal for help.
“I want to have more depth on the offensive line. I want to have more depth on the defensive line and be able to with stand. We've had injuries the last couple of years, unfortunately, of some key guys, and it's hurt us.” Allen said.
With the visit window opening on January 4th, action on the recruiting trail should pick up quickly.
