There are now 55 days remaining until the Indiana Hoosiers kick-off the 2016 season in Miami against the Florida International Golden Panthers. Join us each day for each part of our 100-day countdown to the opener! Today we are profiling incoming freshman defensive back A'Shon Riggins.
A’Shon Riggins (Incoming Freshman)
-Height: 6’0”
-Weight: 160 pounds
-Hometown: Hamilton, Ohio
-Position: Cornerback
Hamilton, Ohio has given Indiana one of their best defensive players in recent history in linebacker Marcus Oliver, and the Hoosiers should be getting another on in cornerback A’Shon Riggins. According to 247 Sports Composite Rankings, Riggins is the 49th best player in the talent-rich state of Ohio and is the 119th best cornerback in the nation.
Riggins played both offense and defense for Hamilton High School. He earned special mention all-state, Enquirer Media All-Star and first team all-district as a senior. As well as first team All-Greater Miami Conference over his final two seasons. He finished his senior season in 2015 with 41 tackles, one sack and one interception while hauling in 52 passes for 805 yards (15.5 average) with six touchdowns. He added 257 yards on 15 attempts (school record 17.1 average) with four TDs and added 227 kick return yards. Riggins also holds the school single-game record with 10 receptions.
Riggins is a tremendous athlete and it’d be hard to not put him on the field this year. However, Riggins is small at 160 pounds and could benefit from a year to learn the defense and put on bulk in Keith Caton’s strength program. On the other side, the IU secondary could use an athlete like Riggons in dime packages and the kick return unit could be bolstered by his speed.
Share any memories or recollections you have of A’Shon Riggins as a player in the comments section (or on the message boards) and be sure to come back to Hoosier Huddle each day during our countdown!
