There is less than one week between now and the season-opening contest between Indiana and Ohio State! Yes, a mere six days from today, the Hoosiers will take the field against the #2 Buckeyes and help get the 2017 college football season underway in front of a national television audience. The Hoosiers secondary will have its hands full, taking on JT Barrett and new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, and one of the players tasked with slowing down the Buckeyes is back-up Husky Zeke Walker.

Zeke Walker

-Height: 6’2”

-Weight: 215 pounds

-Hometown: Columbia, South Carolina

-Position: DB

Zeke Walker was expected to have a role during the 2017 season but his importance was somewhat magnified following the unfortunate and frustrating compliance issue that led to talented freshman Bryant Fitzgerald being forced to redshirt. The loss of Fitzgerald, a player that would have seen snaps at Husky, leaves Zeke Walker as the direct back-up to starter Marcelino Ball. The Hoosiers would love to have as many talented pieces as possible but the hard-hitting Walker should help mitigate some of the sting felt from losing the freshman for the season.

Walker came to Indiana after a successful career at Brookland-Cayce High School in South Carolina where he filled dual-roles as a defensive back and a quarterback. He redshirted the 2014 season before appearing in four of the first five games of the 2015 season. Unfortunately, he was lost for the season with a season-ending injury. He came back strong in 2016, playing in all 13 games and posting ten tackles on the year.

At 6’2” and nearly 220 pounds, Walker is a big safety that is the ideal build for the Husky position. The redshirt junior is a terrific athlete and a heavy hitter that could play a big role against run-heavy or pro-style offenses like Wisconsin or Michigan State and the option attack of Georgia Southern. Pass coverage has not been a strength of Walker’s game and that holds him back from extensive action anywhere but Husky.
