In 63 Days Hoosier fans will pack up their grills and coolers and head to Bloomington to celebrate the 2017 season opener against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Today we will look at Garrett Lukens a linebacker that transferred in from Saint Joseph’s College.
Garrett Lukens (Redshirt Sophomore)
-Height: 6’2”
-Weight: 220 pounds
-Hometown: South Bend, Indiana
-Position: Linebacker
One of the keys to elevating the Indiana Football program in the Big Ten is elevating its depth. Program depth goes beyond the two-deep and key reserves. Every week the Hoosiers field a scout team that runs the opponents plays and prepares the starters for what they may see on the field on Saturday’s. The better the look from the scout team the better-prepared IU will be. Players like Garrett Lukens are extremely important if Indiana is going to move up to and stay in the middle of the pack of the Big Ten.
Lukens transferred to IU from Saint Joseph’s College prior to the 2016 season. At SJC he made 35 tackles and had two tackles for loss in six games. He had to sit out the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
The redshirt sophomore played his high school football at Saint Joseph H.S. in South Bend, IN. He earned all-state honors as a senior when he had a fabulous season with 120 tackles, 14 TFLs, two forced fumbles and an interception.
Lukens will likely be a much needed depth player who could see time on special teams as a reward for his effort in practice.
