Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 57 Days (Raheem Layne)

We hope everyone has had a fabulous Fourth of July! The next big holiday on the calendar is Labor Day and that means IU Football will have started up. We are now 57 days away from the Hoosiers kicking off to take on Ohio State on August 31st! Today we will take a look at incoming freshman defensive back Raheem Layne.

Raheem Layne

-Height: 6’1”

-Weight: 185 pounds

-Hometown: Deland, Florida

-Position: Defensive Back

The 2017 Hoosiers will have a potentially great secondary that is headlined by senior Rashard Fant and junior Jonathan Crawford, but they’ll need to bring in some quality DB recruits to replenish the roster when these upper classmen move to the next phase of their careers. One of those recruits that will give the Hoosiers a boost in the future and some quality depth this season is Raheem Layne.

Layne is a big corner, a need for the Hoosiers, and has elite speed. He played his high school football at Sebastian River in Deland, Florida. There he led his team to its first ever playoff win and a school-record 11 wins. Layne earned first team all-area honors and a number three ranking in the TC Palm Super 11 rankings by making 57 tackles and picking off two passes, while not allowing a touchdown all year.

While it is extremely difficult for a true freshman to come in and play in Tom Allen’s man defense, it’s not unheard of. A’shon Riggins started eight games as a true freshman in 2016. Layne will have his work cut out for him if he wants to move up the depth chart in 2017, but he does have a skill set that IU needs. His big frame will help against taller receivers and his speed could be difference making on special teams.

We hope everyone is enjoying the Countdown to IUFB Kickoff. We want to make sure everyone receives their Hoosier Huddle apparel before the season starts. In order to have it for the Ohio State game, purchases have to be in by July 13th. ORDER HERE!
