The countdown to kickoff keeps rolling along. With Big Ten media days now wrapped up, we’ve got all the quotes, story-lines and pictures of football players in suits instead of pads that we need. With opening night against Ohio State a little over a month away, today we take a look at the number 36 spot in our countdown, Johnny Albomonte.

JOHNNY ALBOMONTE (REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE)

Height: 511’’

Weight: 183 pounds

Hometown: Schereville, Indiana

Position: Defensive back

Johnny Albomonte is from the Hoosier state, but has yet to see action in a Hoosier uniform. Albomonte was a dual threat at Andrean High School, recording 14 career interceptions and scoring seven touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball. He helped guide Andrean to 29 straight wins and the 2013 state championship. After walking on to the program the Schereville, Indiana product redshirted the 2015 season. He managed to earn scout team player of the week once, a sign of things to come.

This past season Albomonte wasn’t seen at all on Saturday’s, but was named defensive scout team player of the year after earning scout team player of the week a whopping five times. Not to mention Albomonte added Academic All-Big Ten selection to his resume. With a now defensive minded head coach in Tom Allen, those accolades won’t go unnoticed.

Defensive back is a position where Indiana has talent, but I’m not tempted to say their loaded. Outside of Rashard Fant who is set for another stellar year covering the Big Ten’s best, A’shon Riggins, Andre Brown Jr. and Tyler Green have all shown flashes, but all still have things to prove. If Albomonte continues to work hard and be a positive force in practice and excel in the classroom, he could see an opportunity come his way this season.
