We are closing in on the halfway mark of the 2020 Countdown to Kickoff as the Hoosiers are still scheduled to start the season on September 4th.
Name – Jovan Swann
Position – Defensive Line
Year/Hometown – Fifth Year Senior from Greenwood, Indiana
Height – 6’2”
Weight – 270 pounds
Swann was the crown jewel of the transfer portal pickups for the Hoosiers this past off-season. The Greenwood, Indiana native was a prized recruit the Hoosiers wanted out of high school, but Swann chose to go west to Stanford. After four years, the redshirt senior is back in the Hoosier state.
Swann played in 39 games with 19 starts for the Cardinal. As a redshirt freshman in 2017 he played in all 14 games and made 25 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks as he helped Stanford to a Pac-12 North title.
Swann earned All-Pac-12 honors as a redshirt sophomore in 2018 as he started 10 times in 13 games. He raised his tackles for loss total to 7.5 and sack number to 4.5 while making 28 stops.
In his final season at Stanford, Swann made 5.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss. He will be lining up at the three-technique defensive end in IU’s defense.
Swann is excited to be back in his home state and during a Zoom conference with the media expressed the excitement he has for his family and friends as well. “It means more than you know. I ultimately had Indiana in my final three before going to the West Coast. That wasn't just for show. That's because I truly valued the state of Indiana and the support that I have here. To wrap it up here means more than you know. I'm excited to be able to have my family around for games. It was $500 round trip to get to California and that wasn't fun. I had to get my degree and they knew that it was a business trip in that way. Just to be able to come back home and be able to get that support in person, it means the world to me. I'm just excited to give my all to everybody in Indiana” Swann said.
Swann is confident that he can bring some much-needed havoc to the Indiana defensive line. “I know what I bring to the table. It's quickness and some agility. I know leverage up front coming from a guy that's 6-1, 6-2, I know that I'll be able to do a lot of different things and play all four positions and do whatever is asked of me. I'm just going to try to be a versatile guy and make the most chaos that I can in the backfield as is asked of me” he said in the same conference.
