Countdown to 2020 IUFB Kickoff: 36 Days Part II (Nicholas Grieser)
/Written by: Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
It’s another double dip Thursday on the Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff. Earlier we took a look at Chris Childers, next up is Nicholas Grieser.
Name – Nicholas Grieser
Position – Defensive Back
Year/Hometown – Redshirt Freshman from New Castle, Indiana
Height – 6’0”
Weight – 180 pounds
Hailing from Tom Allen’s hometown of New Castle, Indiana Nicholas Grieser joined the Hoosier program as a walk-on during the 2019 season. He did not see any game action. Grieser was a three-sport athlete at New Castle High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. On the football field, Grieser earned all-state and all-conference honors as a senior.
According to his coach Kyle York, Grieser was a ‘glue guy’ for his team. “"I told our staff, if we could have 11 Nicholas Griesers, we would be a phenomenal football team," New Castle coach Kyle York said in an article published by the StarPress last fall. "He's a guy that you can not win football games, play hard football teams without him. He's our glue. He holds us together. He's incredibly smart and incredibly versatile. And he lulls you to sleep a little bit. You don't really think he's that fast or that hard of a tackler. But he consistently finds a way to make plays."
His versatility is extremely valuable to IU’s scout team as he played both ways in high school and he can give you looks at both receiver and cornerback. While Grieser may not see game action in 2020, his effort and leadership could be a big part of how Indiana prepares for games. Even the scout team needs a glue guy and that’s what Grieser is. A glue guy, who will bust his tail for the betterment of the team.
