The 2019 Hoosier Huddle Countdown is now more than a quarter complete! We are just 73 days from the beginning of Indiana’s 2019 campaign and quest to return to a bowl game. Today’s countdown feature focuses on one of the highest ranked prospects in the incoming 2019 recruiting class: defensive end Beau Robbins.

High school football in the state of Indiana has risen dramatically in the past decade. More and more prospects from the Hoosier state and reaching 3-star and 4-star status and earning scholarship offers to major programs. One of the key high school programs in that rise is powerhouse Carmel High School and the latest Greyhound to become a Hoosier is 4-star defensive end Beau Robbins. Robbins stepped into the spotlight in 2017 as a high school junior. He had 58 tackles and 11 sacks. His length, speed and frame made him an intriguing prospect for a number of ACC, SEC and Big Ten programs. In June of 2018, Robbins chose to stay in home-state and committed to Indiana and defensive line coach Mark Hagen over offers from Iowa, Boston College, Arkansas and several others. He then increased his production on the gridiron in 2018, amassing 82 tackles, six sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

“Beau Robbins was a priority from day one,” Mark Hagen told 247Sports after signing day. “I think both at the end and the tackle positions, I think he was the first guy that we offered in this 2019 class a couple years ago. We think he is an every-down player for us at strong-side defensive end.”

That quote from Mark Hagen, and the stats Robbins produced in high school, are quite telling. The coaching staff views Robbins as more than just a pass rush specialist, they see him as “an every-down player”. The Hoosiers have a few of those (James Head immediately comes to mind) but finding players that can be effective at end against both the run and the pass and help you on all three downs is very difficult. That’s what made Robbins such a big priority for the staff. Beau Robbins ended his high school career around 240 pounds and it seems likely the staff would like for him to be around 260 pounds when the season begins. That would put him right around the weight of James Head (264), Gavin Everett (265) and Michael Ziemba (266) and it would be easier he could stand up against the run and the rugged Big Ten offensive lines. While it is unclear how quickly Robbins can adjust to the college game, there is no doubt the coaching staff expect him to contribute and help further bolster the depth of the line. I’m not an expert on defensive linemen but Mark Hagen is so take his word for it, a “bright, bright future awaits him (Robbins) in Bloomington.”
